What is heroism? What is a hero? Does a hero have to have rippling muscles and superpowers? Is a nurse as much of a hero as a firefighter? Merriam-Webster defines a hero as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities”. This means that anyone with fine qualities can be a hero! In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus is a hero in three ways.
The first way Atticus is a hero is through his brave acts. Atticus describes courage or bravery as “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (112). Atticus uses this quote to describe Mrs. Dubose, but he does not seem to see how it so easily applies to his own life. Mrs. Dubose is a morphine addict who decides she
Many heroes exists in todays world. Some are just fictional but the real ones are the ones worth mentioning. A true hero is a person who is willing to sacrifice everything for the well being of others. they're giving personalities cause them to give everything they can to help others. They are constantly in a race to fight for something beneficial to all.
Heroes come in different shapes, sizes, and looks. Maybe someone you saw on the street one day was heroic for saving someone’s life in a car accident. A hero to me is someone who can be brave in situations that aren’t so safe, and take a risk to make sure everyone is okay, no matter who
Atticus Finch from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is a caring figure. After Jem had destroyed Mrs. Dubose’s flowers Atticus comforts Scout. “Atticus pushed my head under his chin. ‘It’s not time to worry yet,’” (Pg. 139, Lee). This quote shows how Atticus is a caring figure because he comforts Scout after Jem took her batton and destroyed it along with Mrs. Dubose’s flowers. Another example is when Mrs. Dubose dies and Atticus comes home with a box from her to Jem. “Jem buried his face in Atticus’s shirt front. ‘Sh-h,’ he said. ‘I think that was her way of telling you-everything’s all right now, Jem, everything’s all right…” (Pg. 149, Lee). This quote also shows how Atticus is caring because when Jem freaks out about receiving a mountain
"to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun
Scout and Jems’ mother died when they were young, leaving them with their father and maid, Calpurnia. Their father is Atticus Finch, a well respected man among the community. When Atticus gets appointed to a difficult case, he has to take his young children through a rough time. Atticus is a good father because he shows courage, explains things to the kids, and is an honest man.
Atticus is a Hero In Maycomb, Alabama, a white lawyer, Atticus Finch, is defending an innocent black man, Tom Robinson, for raping a white women, Mayella Ewell. This is a time of racism and hatred. Atticus has two children, Jem and Scout. Atticus Finch in Harper Lee’s
Courage fluctuates on a spectrum of definitions, from performing a service one disdains for the sake of another, to jeopardizing one's freedom for the eradication of racial segregation. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee investigates the racist undertones prevalent in the trial of Tom Robinson, an African-American man who was erroneously prosecuted for the accused rape of Mayella Ewell, a Caucasian teenage girl. Atticus Finch, a widowed father of two and impartial lawyer, is tasked with the vindication of Tom Robinson; despite the odium and biased ridicule he receives from others. Through Atticus’s character, Lee defines courage as an unwavering resolve. Consequently, one will find themselves constantly defending their perspective
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is a lawyer who decides to defend a black man. This man’s name was Tom Robinson, and he was accused of raping a girl named Mayella Ewell. Atticus believes that these accusations were false so he decided to stand up for Tom. Atticus was right to stand up for Tom Robinson because he believed in stopping racism, doing what is right, and defending an innocent man.
The novels: To Kill A Mockingbird and When A Girl Is Born show a common feature of having the courage to call in question the social norms of their society. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus challenges Maycomb's ways as he defends a black man accused of raping a white woman. By doing so, he is accepting the impossible by admitting that a black man is innocent and hence accusing a white folk of being guilty. As a result of doing so, he attracts many hardships. For instance, Bob Ewell disrespects Atticus by spitting on him, in return Atticus says, "So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that’s something I’ll gladly take." This quote shows how Atticus considers the ignorant and cruel paradigm
“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen,” said by Winston Churchill. I think this quote relates to Atticus because of the trial, he has to speak up for what he believes in and he also has to sit down and listen. It also relates to what Atticus tells his kids sometimes, like the time with Scout and school. In To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus is a wise father, a clever lawyer, and a brave man.
That’s what Atticus believed was courage, which is why he thought that Mrs. Dubose fit that attribute. She was well aware of the consequences of being a morphine addict; she knew for a fact that she had a few months left to live because of it. Yet, she still stuck around and fought through it as long as she
What is heroism? Perhaps the best way to approach this question is not to ask what is a hero, but rather what makes a person a hero? Is it their strength? Their accomplishments? Their drive and passion?
Atticus Finch is a man who has a philosophical definition of courage. He doesn’t believe in the stereotypical version like Jem, instead he finds people courageous if they keep trying even when they think they won’t succeed. His idea of courage is shown throughout the novel. Atticus finds Mrs. Dubose very brave because “according to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody” (112) that was his real meaning of courage. She was doing her best to get rid of her morphine addiction before she died. Even though she knew that there was a large possibility that she would die before she could stop, she still persevered and tried her best. In this case though, Mrs. Dubose beat the odds and accomplished her goal. In her last minutes, she knew
Atticus demonstrates emotional and physical bravery in many ways during the To Kill a Mockingbird. In the beginning of the book, Atticus “defines” bravery and gives an example to his kids. He tells them,“‘She (Mrs. Dubose) was the bravest person I ever knew’” (Lee 149). By providing an example of courage, it shows that Atticus knows what courage is. Atticus remembers Mrs. Dubose as an example of someone who showed courages and then tried to demonstrates courage in his own way. One way he
What is heroism? Things preformed Superman, Batman, or The Flash? This is what most people think about when they hear the word hero or heroism. Although these characters show heroism, the definition of heroism does not have to be narrowed to the stereotypical hero. Many people have different concepts on heroism. A hero can be a ordinary person like a firefighter or cop. Heroism is a attribute that a person can obtain but they have to choose actions that help others like a fearless firefighter or cop helping others. Heroism also does not call for a reward for being heroic. Heroism is a quality or an act in all of us that a person uses to benefit for the good of other people even if there is a risk.
