What is heroism? What is a hero? Does a hero have to have rippling muscles and superpowers? Is a nurse as much of a hero as a firefighter? Merriam-Webster defines a hero as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities”. This means that anyone with fine qualities can be a hero! In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus is a hero in three ways.
The first way Atticus is a hero is through his brave acts. Atticus describes courage or bravery as “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (112).
