Atticus Role Model

What is being a role model? Being a good role model is showing people how to be a good example by sticking to your own rules and standards yourself. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus shows this many times throughout the story. To Atticus, not following his own values means he cannot tell his children Scout and Jem to do anything anymore. There are three examples of when Scout and Jem learn to admire their father, when Tim Johnson had rabies, when he was a lawyer during a court session, and what happened after the court session. One event, where Scout and Jem learned not to underestimate Atticus is when the neighborhood dog, Tim Johnson, had rabies. “With movements so swift they seemed simultaneous, Atticus’s hand yanked a balled-tip lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder.” (Page 127). Scout is completely thrown off by the fact that Atticus shot Tim Johnson on his first attempt. The quote also shows that Scout is in awe because Atticus can move so fast. This is mainly due to Scout thinking Atticus is an old man. “ ‘d you see him, Scout? ‘d you see him just standin’ there… ‘n’ all of a sudden he just relaxed all over, an’ it looked that gun was a part of him.” (Page 129). Jem is pleasantly surprised to learn that Atticus is a natural sharpshooter. Also, this encounter taught Jem that Atticus is not useless after all. “Well now, Miss Jean Louise… still think your father can’t do anything? Still ashamed of him?” “Nome,” I said
