The selfish attributes the dogs possess cause the friendships between them to fall apart. Although the dogs are considered a pack they do not deeply care for each other. The dogs mostly look out for themselves. When Bella and Athena are attacked with stones by the boys in the park and Bella attacks the them Atticus is excited because “They will come for her, but they will not come for us” (Alexis,25). When the problem arises that the dog 's territory is being threatened because of Bella and Athena 's action, Atticus does not worry and tells the dogs they will not have to leave because they will not be the ones targeted. The selfishness Atticus displays by not caring about the other dog’s safety is a critical reason on why his …show more content…
Benjy pretends to be intrigued in his friendships with the other dogs, but only because it benefits himself. When Prince and Benjy see each other, Benjy shows no interest in rekindling his friendship with Prince he is mostly, “Bored by Prince’s accounts of his travels, Benjy said- yes, yes, but where do you sleep and what do you eat” (105). While Prince is thrilled to see someone who speaks his own language, Benjy manipulates Prince by pretending to be excited on seeing him, but only uses him to find shelter and then ditches Prince the moment he can. Also, Benjy uses Miguel to teach him the human language behind Majnoun’s back. After Majnoun attacked Benjy for speaking to Nira, Benjy decides to take a different approach, “The dog might not be dangerous, but he was overly sensitive and it would be difficult to keep his conversations with Miguel secret from Majnoun” (84). After being forbidden from talking to Nira by Majnoun, Benjy disregards his friends wishes and begins speaking to Miguel and receives help from him. Instead of listening to Majnoun’s and just learning the human language from Majnoun, Benjy does not believe this will develop his skills fast enough and uses Miguel to teach him, but knows he must keep it a secret to be kept in the pack. Benjy 's inability to listen or hear other people leads him to make poor choices that cause him to lose
In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout’s father, Atticus demonstrates his self-control and empathy towards Scout and her problems which makes him a positive role model in his daughter’s life and maturation growth. After school, Scout exclaims to Atticus that she does not want to attend school anymore due to the fact she had a dreadful first day of the first grade. She complains to Atticus about her teacher, Miss.Caroline and how she disapproves of Scout’s competency of reading and writing. Miss.Caroline expresses to Scout that she should not be literate at her age and now has to undo the damage that has been done by her father; this statement is ironic because teachers are supposed to encourage learning and help further advance their
Throughout the novel, Atticus reveals his bravery. He demonstrates this quality by killing Tim Johnson, the rabid dog. Jem and Scout are looking for squirrels to shoot when Jem spots a suspicious-looking dog down the road. Immediately, he tells Calpurnia who confirms the dog is rabid and calls Atticus at his office. After she proceeds to tell the
That word, boundaries, did not live in Atticus’ personal dictionary. He always told himself that there was no limits for him, that he could do anything if he just trained hard enough. He never told a soul that, but people that had witness this man train started to realize that. He’d go hours without taking a break. In general, no one would mess with Atticus, just simply because he would never talk. That only meant that no one would dare to bother the man when he was training for something important. Atticus wiped the ample amount of sweat bullets running down his forehead with his cloth. He rolled his shoulders back, picking up his gallon water bottle, he made his way out of
After making fun of Mr Avery by making a snowman replica of him on the day of the fire the children feel guilty when he saves miss Maudie’s furniture and they realize it isn’t what you look like on the outside when it comes to peoples values it’s what you’re like on the inside and in a difficult situation. Jem persists in complaining about Atticus not being like a Father should be so doing what all the other contemporaries’ Dads did, for example drinking, playing football etc. Miss Maudie tries to make Jem realize Atticuss worth she says ‘he make someone’s will air tight’ but he cannot be convinced. Subsequently Atticus shoots Tim Johnson, the dog with rabies with a perfect shot, Jem is astonished and in complete awe of his Father and doesn’t protest about Atticus again.
Throughout Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, it seems as if Atticus Finch is a failure as both a parent and a lawyer. However, somebody with a good understanding of the novel will realise that Atticus is in fact a terrific lawyer and a superb father. However, like all people, Atticus has his flaws.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…..until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it”(33). This quote is one of many wise sayings by Atticus Finch, a character in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Finch is a lawyer for Maycomb County, Alabama, and the father of Jeremy (Jem) and Jean Louise (Scout) Finch. The story presents Atticus guiding Jem and Scout through the struggles of life, while he was defending Tom Robinson in Robinson’s rape case. Throughout the novel, Atticus demonstrates many positive character traits, including being honorable, fearless, and knowledgeable.
Atticus’s motivation(Brain) is equality among everyone. He shows that he cares for everyone equally by standing by Tom Robinson. “Get aside from the door, Mr. Finch.” “You can turn around and go home again, Walter,” Atticus said pleasantly. “Heck Tate’s around somewhere”(pg 153). This showed how even though the whole town came to try and kill Tom, Atticus did not even think for a moment to leave and let it happen. Atticus's goals(Eyes) are centred around his children he hopes that they will be safe and he wants to give them all the chances to succeed as he can. Atticus cares dearly about scout and Jem. He is worried about Scout and her future but he is doing as much that he can to make sure that she while have a good life. “Hotheadedness
I though that Atticus had different values than many people in the town. His values were his own and he was strong about them. I believe that Atticus values were righteous and did think that were side of justices even if it meant going against his own town.
In this journal, I will be evaluating the theme of walking in someone’s shoes. An example of the theme walking in someone’s shoes is with Tom Robinson and Atticus Finch. To start, Atticus is able to walk in Tom’s shoes because they are both honest. One example of honesty would be when Atticus told his kids he could not win this court trial because of racism, but he would still try. Atticus being able to be honest with his kids is important because it shows that he is an honest person.
In this excerpt, Lee highlights the racism that is devastating Maycomb and the people in it. While Atticus talks over the significant events that happened just beforehand, he comes to an epiphany that “A mob’s always made up of people”, and human’s can make mistakes and have the ability to empathize. By having Atticus realize this, Lee portrays a sense of empathy in him, but emphasizes that empathy to a point is no longer valid. Lee does this by having Atticus realize “a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they’re still human.”. An animal, by definition, is not a human, which makes Atticus’ reasoning false. This shows that a person is only empathetic and “human” to a point, while some people have lost their title as a human
As a result of Atticus's decision, Jem and Scout get into a number of fights with classmates and their cousin when they taunt them and call Atticus a "nigger lover." Life seems to be full of lesson for Scout and Jem. For example, when a rabid dog chases Scout, she discovers that her father, whom she previously thought too old to do anything, does possess some talents. Atticus turns out be a crack shot, killing the dog in one shot at a great distance. Another time the children learn to be tolerant of people who have problems even though they say mean things. A neighbor, Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose, derides Atticus and spreads lies about him, and screams insults at the children when they pass by. Jem gets very angry at her and cuts off her flowers from her bushes. Instead of siding with Jem, Atticus feels that what he did is wrong and as punishment, Jem has to read out loud to her every day to take her mind off her predicament. Atticus holds this old woman up as an example of true courage as she
In recent literary history, perhaps the strongest contender for the one character that has had the greatest influence on a generation is Atticus Finch, father of the protagonist in “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Both as a father, and a lawyer, he has served, and still today serves as a pillar of righteousness and morality. The ability for his morality to translate to all people, across ages, races, and cultures, is a feat preformed by Harper Lee in her masterpiece, “To Kill A Mockingbird”. She establishes Atticus Finch as the moral center of the novel by juxtaposing his actions and the relationships with those of the majority of Maycomb. In doing so, she has made him a cultural, and oftentimes personal icon.
Because of this, he is never able to communicate with anyone other than the members of his pack. Some of the other dogs, like Benjy and Majnoun, took to learning English, in order for them to communicate with humans. In doing this they are able to form relationships, quite deep relationships in fact, with humans. However, because Prince never learns a new language, and only uses his language, he is never able to connect with humans, proving that his language is fairly ineffective. And, because Prince never learns English, and thus never bonds with humans through the use of language, he is often picked over. Specifically, when both Benjy and Prince go to a house, where Prince had previously formed a relationship with a woman who lived there, Benjy is taken in, and Prince is turned away. Benjy spoke English to the woman, and she is fascinated by him, because “[i]t is almost as if the beagle understood them” (Alexis 108) thus causing “[m]uch of her affection for [Prince] [to be] transferred to Benjy on the spot” (Alexis
I’m the same in the house as outside of the house. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee Atticus shows he is fair to everyone no matter where he is. Atticus believes everyone should be treated equal. No matter who Atticus puts in danger he treats everyone fairly. Atticus shows his children how to respect people and treat them right no matter what the other person does or says to them. Atticus symbolizes equality and justice not only in the courtroom but outside of the courtroom.
A third characteristic of Atticus is his daring personality. The very thought of defending a black man’s case was socially unacceptable during the 1940s, much less encouraged for a lawyer. However, Atticus is bold enough to do what is right and take the chance. He very well knows from the start that the jury’s prejudice would outweigh the evidence in the end, but he decides to risk it. Another example of his daring character is Atticus’s parenting style. He does the best that he can as a sole parent for Jem and Scout, despite the frowns of social disapproval that his methods bring. Even Atticus’s sister, Alexandra, criticizes him because he does not use a firm hand with them. A third example of his daring personality is when he shoots the mad dog. Atticus even says, “I haven’t shot a gun in thirty years” (Lee 127) but still takes a risk in order to
