In this journal, I will be evaluating the theme of walking in someone’s shoes. An example of the theme walking in someone’s shoes is with Tom Robinson and Atticus Finch. To start, Atticus is able to walk in Tom’s shoes because they are both honest. One example of honesty would be when Atticus told his kids he could not win this court trial because of racism, but he would still try. Atticus being able to be honest with his kids is important because it shows that he is an honest person. An example of Tom Robinson being honest could be when he was defending himself at the court trial. Tom did not lie at his court trial; that has great importance because it shows that he is an honest person. Atticus and Tom both being honest allows them both to …show more content…
An example of Atticus being selfless is when he decided to help Tom Robinson. Atticus knew that he would be separating himself socially and mentally, but he still decided to help Tom because he is a selfless person. Tom is also selfless for many reasons; one reason is that he chose to help Mayella Ewell. Tom Robinson knew that there were many consequences for a black man just being around a white woman, but he decided to help her anyways with no pay because he is selfless. Tom does not care if he gets in trouble or not; he helps her because he knows it is the right thing to do. With Atticus and Tom both being selfless, their actions can allow each other to walk in each other's shoes. Similar to Tom and Atticus walking in each other’s shoes; Calpurnia and Walter Cunningham are also accurate examples of the theme “walking in someone's shoes”. To illustrate my point, Calpurnia and Walter are both different because of their family’s incomes. Both Calpurnia and the Cunningham family have a lower income compared to most others in the city of Maycomb. An example of Walter’s family having less money could be when the father has to pay back the Finch family in lumber because they do not have the money to pay them. The father paying in lumber displays that the Cunningham family has less money; that could separate Walter emotionally from the rest of his classmates. Walter could feel like he is not as good as his classmates because of his family's lower income. He could also be separated socially from his classmates, if his classmates left him out from their games because nobody would want to play with the poor kid. Similarly, Calpurnia is a maid for the Finch family, so she makes less money than the average family in Maycomb. Calpurnia is making less money because she is a maid, and that allows her to “walk in Walter’s shoes” because both of their families make less money than average. Next, Calpurnia and Walter are able to “walk in
The story, “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is about racial discrimination in the 1960s. The conflict in the story is when a black man named Tom Robinson is unjustly charged with raping Mayella Ewell and the townspeople believe he is guilty because of his race. A white lawyer named Atticus defends Tom during the trial in order to persuade the Jury to ignore the wrong accusations. Atticus tries to persuade them through the use of pathos and logos to create a feeling of guilt within the Jury and townspeople to influence their decision on Tom Robinson innocence.
Was Atticus a True Hero of To Kill A MockingBird? Yes and no Atticus Finch and Scout Finch were both true heroes of the story because they did many Helpful things throughout the book to help everyone no matter what they were or what they look like. Atticus had a lot of courage such as when he help out Tom Robinson at the jail he stayed with Tom at the jail even know he knew that the mod of white Americans of Maycomb would come for Tom and try to kill him. When Tom Robinson was convicted of raping a white girl Tom stranded up for him and showed courage which as a white person it was not a normal thing to stand up for a black person. Although Scout is a hero in the book too, Throughout the book Scout learns about her life and gets to
Cal understands that Walter’s family is less fortunate than the Finchs, which she feels empathic towards him because she can relate to this. Calpurnia was able to understand that because
Honorable. According to dictionary.com honorable means worth of honor and high respect. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch represents the definition of honorable. Throughout the entire book Atticus is fair, brave, reliable, and many other characteristics. Having these characteristics Atticus is a very good role model for his children. One of the most distinguished ays that Atticus shows honor is through his fairness.
Atticus’s character reinforces his honesty when he expresses his opinions about all men being equal. Atticus knows that Tom Robinson will lose the case against Mayella Ewell, but the author makes a point by Atticus saying “But there is one way in this country in which all men are created equal-there is one human institution that makes a pauper the equal of a Rockefeller, the stupid man the equal of an Einstein, and the ignorant man the equal of any college president.” (p.274) This detail is important because it explains how Tom, and all other men are equal and helps me better understand the author’s purpose by Atticus explaining how he believes and says all men are equal. The author’s purpose is to explain that no matter who you are, everyone is created equal and should be treated the same. While Lee tries to make a point being racist or treating colored differently, Atticus says “I am confident that you gentlemen will review without passion the evidence you have heard” (p.274). When Lee gives this evidence, it shows importance on how all men are created equally, and should be treated equally. Atticus shows honesty by telling the truth and portrays an image of how the other men are being racist and how they should treat Tom like any other man. Lee uses honesty and explains how everyone should be treated the same. Lee uses characterization and depicts that passion and honesty are the keys to achieving social
At least a little courage is in everyone, along with courage comes personal integrity, shaped by our own acts and choices. One’s personal integrity comes out in situations that possess a complication that requires solving. Moreover, choosing the courageous and onerous paths in life leads to a personally profound, improved integrity allowing one to have a fuller life. Though some people already have personal integrity that helps them with decisions, all ages are capable of making courageous decisions that still shape integrity. Although the first scenario to come to one’s mind would be a youth with minor troubles, even our elders of higher ages still encounter decisions that require courage. The significance of a decision is irrelevant, whether
Atticus Finch is a character from chapters 1-7 that demonstrates moral courage. Atticus shows moral courage. Atticus shows moral courage because he is an honest man. He often says to his kids to think of something from the others point of view, before someone judges them. “As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jems skin and walk around in it.” (Page 64 paragraph 1) He always looked for and opportunity to make his children better people. Atticus told Scout to think about what Jem did and imagine herself in that situation. This shows that
In Chapter 20, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee; the father of two children, whom have been targeted by adults and children alike, Atticus. He is a defense attorney with one obligation, to himself, to Tom Robinson, to his children, and most importantly the citizens of Maycomb, Alabama. His job is to defend a man who he is certain is innocent (only guilty of being a victim to prejudice) to stand in front of a jury full of men who respect him but deny an honest man of his salvation. Atticus has one opportunity to save a man’s life, and in his noble attempt he strains to reach the jury, while Harper Lee connects with her reader with ease.
In To Kill a Mockingbird and 12 Angry Men, both men, Atticus and Mr. Davis, persuade the jury by logos to prove that the defendant is innocent. In Atticus’s closing argument, Atticus used logos in his evidence and facts that he provided during the trial to persuade the jury that Tom Robinson was innocent. Atticus started off his closing statement by stating the obvious, Tom Robinson has no use of his left hand and he could not have punch Mayella on her right side of her face. Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell even though “the state has not produced one iota of medical evidence that the crime Tom Robinson is charged with ever took place. It has relied instead upon the testimony of two witnesses whose evidence has not only
Atticus is the greatest example of understanding others. He is one of the most kind hearted, caring, understanding in maycomb. After the trial, Bob Ewell came up and spat in Atticus’ face. Bob Ewell felt vexation towards Atticus. But Atticus took it calmly as ever, and explained to Jem why he acted as he did. To a furious Jem, Atticus says "Jem, see if you can stand in Bob Ewell's shoes a minute. I destroyed his last shred of credibility at that trial, if he had any to begin with. The man had to have some kind of a comeback, his kind always does. So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella one extra beating, that's something I'll gladly take. He had to take it out on somebody, and I'd rather it be me than that household of children
When Atticus is defending people, he will do whatever it takes to help that person out even if they can’t afford his services. When Mr.Cunningham was needing Atticus’s services and couldn’t afford them, Atticus came up with a way that would help him. Mr.Cunningham brought hickory nuts to Atticus in order to pay off a legal debt. No one would help Mr.Cunningham, but Atticus saw that he was a good man and was worth fighting for him even though he could not pay Atticus. He was the only one willing to help the poor in a time when almost no one had money. “He is paying me for some legal work I did for him… That’s the only way he can … he has no money”(Foote page 7).Atticus understood that it was tough times for most people and that the farmers had no money so he came up with a way for Mr. Cunningham to pay for his legal entailments when no else would help Mr.Cunningham. He knew in his heart that helping Mr.Cunningham with his legal entailments was the right thing to do when no one else would help him. Everyone thought only about themselves when Atticus was thinking about about the people in his
In the novel, ‘To kill A Mockingbird’ the theme of put yourself in someone’s shoes appears many times. This is important to the book because it shows us that never judge someone without knowing the entire story. The characters put themselves in someone’s else shoes in different ways. Jem begins to understand Mrs. Dubose, Dolphus Raymond not being a drunk, Tom Robinson feeling sorry for Mayella, and Scout seeing Boo’s point of view from his porch.
Atticus is a great parent. He does many things that make him a great parent such as, being respectful, giving great advice, and he is very caring. To begin with, Atticus does not expect the respect of his children but earns it, this is shown many times, but the best example is when he tells Scout “We’ll go on reading as we always have.” (pg.41) he is showing he respects Scout because he believes she is smart enough to read and agrees more with Scout than her teacher. Secondly, he gives them great advice, when Scout is upset about her teacher telling her not to read, Atticus tells her that she will get along with people better if she can climb into their skin and walk around in it. He makes her understand what is happening in her life and resolves her issue. Lastly, Atticus is very caring.
In recent literary history, perhaps the strongest contender for the one character that has had the greatest influence on a generation is Atticus Finch, father of the protagonist in “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Both as a father, and a lawyer, he has served, and still today serves as a pillar of righteousness and morality. The ability for his morality to translate to all people, across ages, races, and cultures, is a feat preformed by Harper Lee in her masterpiece, “To Kill A Mockingbird”. She establishes Atticus Finch as the moral center of the novel by juxtaposing his actions and the relationships with those of the majority of Maycomb. In doing so, she has made him a cultural, and oftentimes personal icon.
I sat in my chair with a mug of tea nestled in my hands. The missionary ladies had all left for their homes, which left me with silence around the house. The sweet aroma of tea relaxed my taut body. It had been a long day - too long.
