The items of this Likert scale are divided into two categories: "pro" and "anti". A "pro" item is one that is worded such that a response of "Agree" infers the participant has a favorable attitude toward the questionnaire topic and a response of "Disagree" infers a negative attitude, at least in regards to the particular aspect of the topic covered by that item. In an "anti" item, the scoring order is reversed: a response of "Disagree" or "Strongly disagree" reflects a favorable attitude toward the topic of the questionnaire, while a response of "Agree" or "Strongly agree" reflects and unfavorable attitude. It is important that the questions are ordered randomly rather than organizing the "pro" and "anti" items systematically. This prevents the participants, who may be absolutely certain of their attitude toward the questionnaire topic, from growing accustomed to always selecting the same response. For example, a participant who has a highly favorable attitude toward astrology may grow accustomed to selecting "Strongly agree" if the first half of the questionnaire consists only of "pro" items. This participant may then find it unnecessary to read the questions because he/she believes that "Strongly agree" will always be appropriate.
