Audience Analysis Net Questions

1). Why is audience analysis the most important part of the writing process for technical writers? Do you agree with this idea?
Audience analysis is an important part of the writing process because the writer needs to be able to understand the needs and interests of the intended group they are writing too. The writer will direct their writing style to the intended audience so that it is easy to understand (for customers) or direct (often used for executives). How the message is presented will be even more effective depending on the tone used.

What are these categories? How would your writing differ for each category?
Audiences fall under four different types of categories with varying degrees of expertise and knowledge. They are described as follows.
a) Experts – They have the degrees, knowledge have developed and researched the product. The consumer would have a difficult time understanding this group. I would use a direct approach when writing to this group since they are very knowledgeable in their field. I would explain each concept fully and highlight important ideas. I may even put my findings in the form of a report.

I would use a direct approach with this group as well since they do not like to waste time. My writing style would be concise, clear and to the point without the use of lengthy words. If these were government officials I was speaking to a briefing note may be used.

I would apply the KISS formula; Keep It Short and Simple to this type of audience. This group may have some knowledge about a product or service however, the idea is to keep the message simple without the use of flowery words, and not burden them with too much information.
3) What are some characteristics you should know about your audience before you begin writing? Why is this important?
Answer
I believe it is important to know the gender, income level, age range, culture and marital status of your audience. Knowing these characteristics helps a writer to understand if an audience may be interested in a product or service and how well it would sell. For example, a couple with children may be interested in having a double stroller whereas those are not parents would not besssss. Another example is offering alcohol at a restaurant in Turkey where it is forbidden.
4) What are some techniques you can use as a writer to make sure your audience understands what you are trying to say?
