I chose the activist and political leader from the country of Burma (Myanmar), Aung San Suu Kyi.

Biography (Early Life)

Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Burma on June 19, 1945. She was raised in Burma through her early years then eventually joined her mother, Daw Khin Kyi in India. Both of her parents were heavily involved in politics. Her mother, Daw Khin Kyi, was appointed as the Burmese ambassador to India in 1960. Her father, General Aung San was a revered national hero in Burma, well known for leading the Burmese people to independence. She was partly educated in India and eventually attended St. Hugh’s College and Oxford University, where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in politics, economics and philosophy. Afterward, she worked in the United Nations Secretariat in New York for two years. In 1972 she married a well-known scholar named Michael Vaillancourt Aris. The pair went on to have two sons, Alexander and Kim. (BOOK BIOGRAPHY OF HER LIFE) In 1988 Suu Kyi had just returned to Burma from studying abroad to tend to her ill mother.
