In Austin there are many local law enforcement agencies that look out for the mass quantity of people that we have living here. Austin Police Department is one of the many agencies that Austin has, its mission statement is “To keep you, your family, and the community safe. APD was first founded in the early 1930’s the organization this employs approximately 2,100 officers and civilian personnel. The Austin Police Department’s basic goal is to protect life, property, and to preserve the peace in a manner consistent with the freedom secured by the United States Constitution. It is APD duty to guarantee these inalienable rights in strict accordance with the highest principles of our society. APD role is to enforce the law in a fair and impartial manner. It is not APD’s role to legislate, render legal judgment, or punish. The services that APD provides to the community are Financial Crimes Unit, Gang Suppression Unit, Homicide, Human Trafficking Unit, Internal Affairs, K9 Unit, Special Weapons & Tactics (SWAT), and Traffic Enforcement. In the early planning stages of UCR, it was recognized that the differences among state and local criminal codes precluded the possibility of creating a national crime total based upon an aggregate of local statistics. To provide for national uniformity, the IACP adopted standardized definitions of crimes to overcome the problems posed by the variations in state and local definitions of crimes. Reporting agencies were required to interpret local criminal acts in the context of the standard national definitions before submitting their crime totals.
