In our Australian society Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander people participate in an equally balanced society wherein they are able to live their lives freely from assumption made by others as to what is best for them. Recognizing their values, culture, tradition and respecting their differences is must for them to co-exist within the society.
Australia has two distinct indigenous groups namely Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The main objective of colonisation was to wipe off the Aboriginal/or Torres Strait Islander people in order to enable the development of the land. Indigenous people have experienced a great deal of displacement, battles were fought unfortunately not only the Indigenous worriers but women and children were killed. Distributing poisoned flour to the Aboriginals, deliberately introducing diseases such as measles, chicken pox and influenza which has a drastic effect on them since there was no vaccination benefit given to them. Using Aboriginal people as readily available workforce. Women used to work as domestics in the house of the British. The use of Aboriginal language and practices were banned and their children were forcibly separated from their families. The Australian Indigenous community hold extremely significant corrections to the land of Australia, of which they refer to as ‘Country.’ Indigenous people acquire deep meaning from the land, sea and the countless resources derived from them. This special relationship has formed for many centuries. To them ‘Country’ is paramount for overall wellbeing; the strong, significant, spiritual bonds embody their entire existence. Knowledge is continually passed down to create an unbroken connection of past,
It is a commonly known issue in Australia that as a minority group, the people of Indigenous Australian ethnicity have always been treated, or at least perceived, differently to those of non-Indigenous disposition. This can be applied to different contexts such as social, economic, education, or in relation to this essay – legal contexts. Generally, Indigenous Australians face issues such as less opportunity for formal education, less access to sufficient income, more health issues, and higher rates of imprisonment (Steering Committee for the Review of Government Service
Archaeologists believe that aboriginals first came to Australia about 45, 000 years ago and were the only population of humans in Australia until the British invasion. There are about 500 different aboriginal groups each with their own language and territory and usually made up of several separate clans. The aboriginals of Australia are marginalised in today society. This marginalisation began right back during the British invasion where they were evicted from their own country, the stolen generation occurred and their health care, education, employment and housing was severely limited. Aboriginals generally live in poor conditions and choose unhealthy lifestyle choices
This indirectly implies the significant role of culture in improving educational outcomes of Aboriginal population. Which role does the acknowledgement of culture play in education of Aboriginal students? Meyer (1998, as cited in Hanlen, 2010) argues that the Aboriginal communities consider the knowledge to come through other people’s knowledge and that a person exists through interaction with other people. Education is considered to be a process which never stops and which is taking place inside the family and daily activities (Hanlen, as cited in Hanlen, 2010). Furthermore, Hanlen argues that the Aboriginal people think about goals of the community as more important than individual goals and all aspects of life are
Understanding how the historical factors have influenced Indigenous Australians helps operationalise the sociological imagination. The history of Indigenous people is important as many of the disadvantages they endure today is connected to the past. A historical awareness influences individuals to understand how organisations and institutions impact the health and wellbeing of a minority (Germov, 2002).The existence of Indigenous Australians well begins before the European invasion and colonisation of Australia. Aboriginal people were the native land owners, as they have been in Australia for over 60,000 years, prior to the British settlement in 1788.3 (workingwithindigenousaustralians.info, 2017). Indigenous Australians have been living off
This essay will discuss the issues for Indigenous Australians only, this however, can be related to any culture, but for the purpose of this essay I will be referring to Indigenous Australians only.
This Assessment will be my personal reflection and analysis of contemporary issues raised for post-colonial Indigenous Australians through two programs on the National Indigenous Television station (NITV), Living Black and NITV News. I will reflect on how these issues have impacted on the relationships between Indigenous Australians and non-Indigenous Australians, and how Indigenous culture impacts 21st century Australia. Through this I will also consider my own feelings and opinions on how these issues are raised and considered.
Indigenous populations have been the carers and custodians of Australia and the Torres Strait for a period in excess of 60,000 years before being
In Australia, we have a diverse society, consisting of many different groups. The people in these groups are all economically and socially different in terms of their backgrounds, as well as having different cultural traditions. The behaviours, attitudes and values of individuals affects the treatment of people in different groups.
This make them to be most disadvantage in our society. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have experienced social, cultural, economic, legal and political discrimination. Aboriginals or indigenous Australians are the native people of Australia. Aboriginals were nomadic people who came to Australia about 40,000 – 60,000 years ago from Southeast Asia. The importance and the usefulness of learning about the histories and the culture of the Indigenous Community’s. The impact of the past that is influencing the future generations. Indigenous Australians issues and the cultural
At least 5,000 indigenous groups can be distinguished by linguistic and cultural differences and by geographical separation” (Texas A&M University, 1992) Without surprise, Indigenous people have been an issue in both socially and politically. Even after Australia developed and became a world leading country, there is still that gap between white Australians and the first Australians. The discrimination that has been happening for so long is still continuous, this is because the first Australians’ culture is different which caused a culture conflict between both
The land has significant importance to Aboriginal peoples because it is more than just ‘land’ to them; it is the core of their spirituality and connection. In regards to land, they believe in preserving the environment, rather than to build upon it and westernise. Aboriginal peoples identify and feel a sense of belonging to their land with the evidence of rock engravings and artwork. They are people as much as white people are, therefore, I have learned to spell it with a capital, be aware of the different groups within Aboriginal peoples (Kaurna, etc.), and to say ‘Aboriginal peoples’ rather than ‘Aboriginal’ because it sounds discriminative and segregated. I acknowledge Aboriginal peoples were the First Nation peoples to settle in Australia; therefore, they have created the fundamental base of adaption for the white peoples, such as digging sticks, rocks to carve with, and even the invention of the Didgeridoo.
Throughout history to present day, Australian culture has become the product of a distinct blend of established traditions and new influences. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the country’s original inhabitants, created the foundation for the land’s cultural traditions over 40,000 years ago. In addition, the rest of Australia’s people are migrants or descendants of migrants from various other countries who transported their own customs, beliefs, and value systems to the land. As a result, Australia’s culture has significantly broadened its social and cultural profile over the years, and still continues to evolve today.
