The dictionary defines an Auteur as a filmmaker whose individual style and complete control over all elements of production give a film its personal and unique stamp. The auteur theory states, the director that overseas all the audio and visuals elements of a film is considered it’s author. Even though the definition of an auteur has been highly debated since the 1940’s, the director is the one that brings a film to life and uses it as an opportunity to express their views on the matter in discussion. The auteur I choose to study was Martin Scorsese, a highly acclaimed director behind some of the most iconic films ever made. After he left his job as a teacher at NYU, Scorsese released his first feature film Who’s that knocking at my door?. …show more content…
Taxi Driver was released in 1976 and focused on Travis Bickle, a mentally unstable war veteran working as a Taxi Driver in New York without an outlet for his deeply disturbing and violent thoughts. The second focus film was Good Fellas, which revolved around Henry Hill and his journey from a local boy turned gangster in neighbourhood of the roughest criminals in New York, released in 1990. The most recent of the three films, released in 2002 was Gangs of New York. Gangs of New York is a film about Amsterdam Vallon, who returns to scene of his father’s murder years later amid violence and corruption to gain power among the locals and avenge his father death. Taking apart Scorsese’s films piece by piece you discover a certain pattern to his film making, the camera angles he uses, his consistent use of the same setting through most films and the dark, gritty themes he displays as well as his unique way of storytelling. Although there are a lot of aspects of Martin Scorsese film that make him an Auteur three of the most important reason are, Scorsese’s love for New York as a setting in a lot of his films, his unique use of narration in a film and most importantly his constant use of dark and gritty
In the film industry, there are directors who merely take someone else’s vision and express it in their own way on film, then there are those who take their own visions and use any means necessary to express their visions on film. The latter of these two types of directors are called auteurs. Not only do auteurs write the scripts from elements that they know and love in life, but they direct, produce, and sometimes act in their films as well. Three prime examples of these auteurs are: Kevin Smith, Spike Lee and Alfred Hitchcock.
An auteur is a singular artist who controls all aspects of a collaborative creative work, a person equivalent to the author of a novel or a play. The term is commonly referenced to filmmakers or directors with a recognizable style or thematic preoccupation.
An auteur is a filmmaker whose movies are characterized by their creative influence. Garry Marshall is an American filmmaker, he has directed more than 15 films in his career. Garry Marshall’s films The Princess Diaries, Valentines Day and Overboard share a common theme of love and a genre of romance and comedy, he likes to use the same actors in his films and have the common plot of a double twist. Garry Marshall likes to keep to the same character persona and film techniques but these generalized similarities are not obvious to the audience, therefore Garry Marshall is not a recognizable Auteur.
An auteur is a director who personal creative vision and style is expressed through films. The term auteur is originated in France and is French for author. There are different ways in which a director can express their vision in films and show who they are. There are many directors that are considered to be a auteur such as: Quentin Tarintino, Tim Burton, Kathryn Bigelow, Stanley Kubrick and Woody Allen. The director I have chosen as an auteur is Spike Lee.
Many people may have a specific style in which they like to dress. A woman might have a signature lipstick she enjoys wearing, a man might have a distinct cologne that stands out from the rest. Movies are not too far apart in comparison. Sometimes people find films more enjoyable than others, and often do not realize they come from the same director. The Auteur theory is a that defines the director as the sole author of the entire film, adding his or her own personal style. When it comes to the world of animation, director Hayao Miyazaki is a pioneer in auteur. His specific directorial style is seen in many of his films in which he manages to make films enjoyable to adults of all ages. Kiki's Delivery Service was one of director Miyazaki's

Auteur Theory is based on three premises, the first being technique, the second being personal style, and the third being interior meaning. Furthermore, there is no specific order in which these three aspects must be presented or weighted with regard to a film. An Auteur must give films a distinctive quality thus exerting a personal creative vision and interjecting it into the his or her films.
Alfred Hitchcock is widely regarded as a prime example of an auteur, a theory that emerged in the 1950s by Truffaut, in the ‘politique des auteurs’ of Cahiers du Cinema (Tudor 121). The auteur theory, as defined by Andrew Tudor, is premised on the assumption that “any director creates his films on the basis of a central structure”(140) and thus, if you consider their films in relation to each other, commonalities can be found within them. These commonalities work to demonstrate the view of the director as “the true creator of the film” (Tudor 122). Evidence of an auteur can be found in examining a director’s creative tendencies, in their distinctive themes and motifs, stylistic choices,
An auteur is a director that influences their films so that they can be considered as an author. Quentin Tarantino is considered an author through his unique directorial film style, examples of Tarantino’s directorial film style are; his use of camera work especially with extreme close-ups, bloody violence, and long drawn-out scenes. We have studied Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 film Django Unchained, as well as Tarantino’s first box office movie Reservoir Dogs to analyse.
The term Auteur seems to bless a privileged group of filmmakers with an almost messiah-like legacy. Men such as Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford and Fritz Lange are believed to inhabit the ranks of the cinematic elite, and not surprisingly most critics are more than willing to bestow upon them the title of Auteur. By regarding filmmaking as yet another form of art, Auteur theory stipulates that a film is the direct result of its director's genius. With the emerging prominence of auteur based criticism in the 1950?s, the role of the director became increasingly integral to a film's success. However most would argue that this form of criticism didn't reach its apex until 1960s, when Andrew Sarris released his
When considering filmmakers and films to add to the canon, the determining criteria can be varied. Typically, canonical films are by visionary auteur filmmakers who 've left some sort of an impact. Sometimes, the impact is only felt long after a film is released (Citizen Kane, for example). Canonical filmmakers create films that surprise, delight, tell a story of cinema, and show something new the audience. They build on what has come before and alter it to fit their own tastes. The mark of an auteur is someone with a distinct style and vision—a person whose films are instantly recognizable as their own. The mark of a good auteur is someone who can pull that off and still create compelling stories with vivid characters. Even though it generally takes time for filmmakers to be canonized, one does have a general sense of who might be added to the canon in the future. For example, Paul Thomas Anderson, still a relatively new filmmaker, is already in the Wesleyan canon. One imagines that Wes Anderson, if he 's not already in it, will be there soon. These directors have signature styles that have been used to make interesting, complex, and ultimately watchable films that can be used to further one’s understanding of film as an art form. It is on these principles that Taika Waititi should be put forward as an applicant for the canon.
With this short but very interesting and informative class I have just scratched the surface of the what it takes to make a full fleged film. It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made.

The director is responsible for overseeing creative aspects of a film. They develop the vision for a film and carry the vision out, deciding how the film should look. The director may also be heavily involved in the writing and editing of the film, as well as managing the script into a sequence of shots, coordinating the actors in the film and supervising musical aspects. The Auteur Theory suggests that films contain certain characteristics or ‘signatures’ that reflect the director’s individual style and give a film its personal and unique stamp. Hayao Miyazaki is one such auteur whose entertaining plots, compelling characters
The history of art dates back to ancient times. Artwork can be, and was, found around the world. What makes art interesting is that it can be created in any way, shape or form with any materials. It seems that the artwork can also tell us a lot about the artist. Art seems to be simply, a direct, visual reflection of the artist’s life. Therefore, one can assume that an artist’s life experiences and beliefs directly influence their art. If we look at examples from different periods of art we will be able to see the connection between the artist and the art.
