Brief Notes on the Topic ‘Force’
It starts with giving an insight to interbeingness as a vulnerable state and how one can attain it.
For achieving this state, one must shatter all cobwebs of control based life i.e. cynicism, judgement and blame. All these control parameters are the mother of fears that one often faces, then the author urges to leave behind this control based state to better understand the state of interbeing.
Author then takes away the interbeings from the state of vulnerability to the state of immense power by quoting that ‘vulnerability and the power go hand in hand’ and further motivates us to withdraw from separate self so that we can get power to rise from conventional ground and accomplish the things beyond one’s capabilities.
To make something happen or accomplish something we uses force whether it is physical, legal, life threatening force or economic force. Economic force most prevalent and used by associating it with comfort, security and survival.

Psychological force has its roots spread right from the childhood of an individual where child craves for conditional approval and rejection and often falls prey to the manipulative praises of parents like ‘good boy’ or ‘good girl’ which ultimately internalize the rejection as self-rejection- guilt and shame. Often time power can be understood as control of material resources and wealth, control of politics and the institutions that make up society (Hutchison,2015). It is important to recognize and identify the core concepts of power or lack of power with individuals in society. The conflict theory allows examination within the text of those who hold power and lack power. The end result of power to hold dominance over another person, group, or society. As a result of the control and power is causes those who lack power to be devalued or alienated from a setting or even society (Hutchinson, 2015).
Many see jealousy, peer-pressure, and genocide to be ways for individuals to learn and understand. Although, these actions only lead to negative outcomes such as common occurrences in society. In conclusion, a person must go through a series of step/stages to reach “self-actualization.” They must achieve his/his “safety” and “physiological” needs “(basic needs).” “Esteem” and “belongingness and love” needs “(psychological needs)” to reach the stage of “self-actualization.” Psychological theories helps us better understand why a character does what he/she did. The theory that I will discuss for my essay is called psychological positivism. Psychological positivism is a theory, which suggest that there is criminal personality that resides in the minds of the criminals. The theory was designed by Austrian neurologist called Sigmund Freud. He believed that some people committed crime due to certain internal factors that one had little or no control over. These internal factors can be formed due to lack of parental love or it can also be formed if an individual has suffered a tragedy in the past which can lead to an individual committing crime. Sigmund Feud also believed that there are more than one aspects to human personality. These aspects are id, ego and superego which developed over time in different stages in one’s life. The first thing that is developed in human personality is the id. It is a biological component of the personality, which include human’s basics. The id is our most primitive need gratification impulses. The second interacting force that is developed in our nature is called superego, which exist in all three of our consciousness. Superego is the higher power of our mind that is concerned with what is socially acceptable. In this essay I shall compare James Scott’s theory of power and resistance with Michel Foucault’s, as in what similarities do they share in their structure of theories; and contrast the difference as in their understanding of power, position they take to look for/into power, exercise of power and resistance in response. By contrasting the two approaches on the subject of power and resistance, I shall argue, if one wish to look for the powerful and the weak, Scott’s approach is the go to. But for now, I find Foucault’s idea more plausible that we are surrounded by or inescapable from power, and that by any means, are not necessarily forced to submission; rather as freedom the same time.
