Autism: Helping Autistic Children Find Their Voice, is essentially about spreading more awareness about the condition. Autism is a misunderstood condition especially when it comes to knowing exactly how to cater to Autistic people in everyday settings such as in school or at home. This book goes into the symptoms that are associated with the condition, as well as common myths and misconceptions that are ultimately hovered over those dealing with Autism. It also discusses the pros and cons of current treatments and therapies available to these individuals. As I begin reading this book I hope to gain a deeper insight into this condition, so that I will be able to have more empathy and be better equipped to support those with Autism. There are other health issues that occur with the disorder such as “Anxiety Disorder, ADHD, epilepsy or seizures, gastrointestinal problems and sleep disturbances”. In order, for autistic children to manage with some of these mental disorders like anxiety, doctors advise that they undergo “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy”. This type of therapy is available for those who are “verbal but do not have the intellectual ability to help them manage their anxiety”. Openly talking about the disorder their sibling can help them gain an understanding of what is going on. Siblings of children with Autism can feel “isolated and unloved because more attention is given to the one who needs more care”. As for parents, staying informed or updated on the disorder is always best. “Being proactive in searching for the best ways to cope with Autism”. One of the most difficult things when dealing with an Autistic child, is not knowing what it is like for them. The condition is simply “inconsistent and unpredictable” because you never know what the child is thinking of, or what to expect next from them.
