I myself have grown up with someone who has Autism. There are definitely some difficulties especially in the beginning, but once you get to know them the are just like anybody else.

Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, is a complex developmental disability. I happen to have two nephews with autism, one who I am very close to and interact with a lot. A child is usually diagnosed with autism during the first three years of life. It is a result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, and affects the development of the person’s communication and social interaction

There are a lot of people who live with autism, and by the time they are adults, are able to take care of themselves. “My autism is the reason I’m in college and successful. It’s the reason I’m in math and science. It’s the reason I care,” (Jacob Barnett). Jacob is a math and physics prodigy, and he lives with autism. All over the internet there are stories about people with autism living normal, or even extraordinary lives. People who work with them learn to accept their quirks and eventually realize that they can function just as well as anyone else. This is one example of someone who learned how to overcome the issues that autism presents, and go on to be something really special.

Autism is a mental disability that develops as the individual grows and develops, it changes the way they view the world and how they interact and understand people, it affects each individual differently due to it being a spectrum disability meaning that there are many forms ranging from atypical autism to high functioning autism this makes it very hard to fully understand it due to a lot of differences. There are around 1 in 100 people who are classed to be on the spectrum, that equals to around 700,000 people within the United Kingdom and it affects more men than women, some people with autism will be able to function within society with slight support from the family, school and work whereas some will need specialist support throughout their whole life this is because there is no cure for autism their parents/ carers have to try to get the care and support they need to overcome challenges that people without autism take

Once the individual with autism transitions into adulthood, the parents have the right to choose what is best for their child. If that is placing them with another sibling or even placing them into a home where they can receive better care that is up to the parents, but society looks at it as abandonment or that the parents just do not want the responsibility anymore. The media and society place such a heavy weight on families with autistic children or autistic adults. Depending on how severe the case is per child is how well their parents can base whether the individual can live on their own, be taken in by a sibling or family member, or placed in home for constant care. Most autistic children, but not necessarily all, cannot make it on their own and will always need to be under someone’s watch and care. As the child transitions into adulthood, parents can teach them basic life skills that may include the following: light cooking, cleaning, laundry, and even possibly driving. Also in many family at least one of the parent cannot work because of caring responsibilities and this puts a massive financial burden

One of the biggest reasons for the autism oversight is that the exact is unknown. Though many studies over several fields of science have been made over the years, none have been able to pin-point the actual cause of this neurological affliction. Many parents want to know if their child can be cured and be able to live a normal life, to which the answer is both yes and no. No one can mentally prepare themselves for the news of their child being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. There are countless of things that people with autism have trouble doing. For example, they may have problems making/maintaining eye contact, holding a conversation, have trouble with reasoning, and have difficulty planning something (“What Is Autism?”). This may be why we hold people affected by ASD to a very low standard because we think they cannot do anything we can. Normally something like this would have a cure but autism does not have a cure because no one knows the cause (“What Is Autism?”). This is very unfortunate for people that have to solve every problem they get differently because they have autism.

Autism has been treated as a curse and a bad thing to have, but there are actually many benefits to having autism. As society treats autism like a curse, it is not that. In fact, it is more of a struggle. The Autistic Spectrum Disorder, universally known as Autism, is a disease that causes a child to face mental, physical, and emotional challenges. Things such as giving a speech in front of a classroom, hugging a friends after a rough day, or changing around your normal day to day routine is a child with autism's nightmare. As they go throughout the day, they are almost trapped inside. Day after day these children, and even adults, are fighting to be like the other kids but just can’t.
