It’s quite surprising that the auto mechanic business has been around for over a 100 years and is still managing to pump its pistons and roll out freshly repaired cars ("The History" Intro), but that wouldn’t be possible without the creation of the automobile in the first place and as such, the history of the automobile is just as important as the history of the auto mechanic business.
Although Leonardo was, in a sense, one of the first to create a vehicle that doesn’t require a horse, a lot of his crazy, but yet genius, ideas never gained enough traction to go past his workshop; so in a strange actuality there really was no specific first automobile…...at least legally (“Who" Text Body). It was created by Charles Edgar Duryea and his brother Frank in 1891 (“Who" Text Body). Because only wealthy citizens could own automobiles, early car owners didn't have local mechanics, or any for that matter, due to the lack of a need for them and that servants did anything they could repair any broken parts (IAMAW Text Body). The creation of the model T, in 1908, was an important step in the auto mechanic’s history as it was the first affordable vehicle on the market along with the invention of the assembly line, which allowed parts to be mass produced and sold to whoever needed them (History.com Model T). By 1900, 4,192 cars were being used in the USA and with all those cars driving around there are bound to be car accidents which paves the way for the auto mechanic business, which has a surprisingly foggy origin (“Automotive Resources" Automotive Career). What doesn’t change between these specializations are the responsibilities, which include: checking and diagnosing the status of vehicles, replacing worn or broken parts and testing car/parts after being replaced, provide details and advice to clients (“Automotive Service Technicians" What Automotive). Unfortunately due to the rough, hands-on, electrical and physical aspect of the career, it has one of the highest injury rates in the occupational world (“Automotive Service Technicians" Work Environment). By 2011 If you are looking for places to work least 31% of mechanics in the US work with automotive dealers while 27% work in Automotive mechanical and electrical repair and maintenance shops (“Automotive Service Technicians" Work Environment).
