Mitsubishi Group of Companies (Mitsubishi motors) The Mitsubishi Group of Companies is a Japanese conglomerate consisting of a range of autonomous business which shares the Mitsubishi brand, trademark and legacy. The Mitsubishi Company was first established as a shipping firm by Yataro Iwasaki in 1870. The Company bought into coal mining in 1881 by acquiring the Takashima mine and Hashima Island in 1890, using the production to fuel their extensive steamship fleet. They also diversified into shipbuilding, banking, insurance, warehousing and trade. Mitsubishi has risen to become a leading automobile company in India through the promotion of their brand cars like the Mitsubishi Cedia and Mitsubishi Lancer, and other SUVs that use diesel like the Montero and Pajero, and have made into the Indian car market having carved a niche for them. For years, Mitsubishi cars have proven themselves to be reliable bringing customer satisfaction with utility and looks. In 2008 Mitsubishi announced plans to quadruple their production capacity within the next three to four years. This plan is to try and capture the growing luxury market by increasing capacity from the present 6, 000 to 24,000 per annum. Locations The company has seven vehicle manufacturing facilities in five countries, Japan, Netherlands, Philippines, Thailand, United States, and twelve plants co-owned in partnership with others. It also has three further engine and transmission manufacturing plants, five R&D centers and 75 subsidiaries, affiliates and partners.
