I.Introduction Imagine if you could ride safely regardless of your driving skill, and having the peace of mind that your loved ones are as safe as they could possibly be wherever their destination may take them. This is the purpose that Google and many other car manufacturers, like Toyota for instance; pursue. One example for instance is that should they be allowed on roads they would increase safety immensely. Countless researches have also proven that autonomous cars would remove at least 90% of human error (Goodell). This would be achieved by eliminating the risk of drivers crashing from being distracted by other things on the road or in the car (Alex). The idea of autonomous or self-driving cars has been gaining popularity in recent years. It is the latest technology in the automotive industry and it has allowed for the capability of navigation and environmental “mapping” without direct human input. As Google and Tesla log miles in the millions, Uber is test driving autonomous vehicles in several major US cities. It’s a flat out race to be first in this market that many believe is inevitable.
Each generation, has given something to humanity, that the majority of us, thought was impossible, and no way is it going to happen. Some people believe that self-driving cars is good for the future and others think it will make us depend on technology too much. It has done this by retrofitting Toyotas, Lexus’s and Nissan with cameras and sensors. “Major car manufactures already market and sell high-end vehicles with features like automated braking self-parking, lane- departure warning, and variable speed cruise control.”(Guerra) there is no doubts about self-driving cars have potential but the technology has serious questions to address. “With the news that driverless cars are coming to our roads, should we be discussing what will happen when the cars has to choose between the safety of its occupant and the safety of the road users.” (Wise) Will the car drive itself off a bridge to avoid an accident? Or run into the side walk to avoid hitting a pedestrian are all the serious questions brought up by people.
Driverless vehicles are coming, whether some of us, such as taxi drivers, want them to or not. The image of large fleets of these types of vehicles of different sizes that pick people up and take them where they need to go is probably the stuff of nightmares for people who currently do this for their livelihood. This technology is no secret as it is being experimented by with more than just by Tesla. GM, Toyota, Mercedes, BMW, and a few others are taking on this new technology and using it to their advantage. Natives don’t have to worry about distance driving. This is important because lots of people travel long distance by car. For example, in the UAE people have families from different emirates. Therefore, on the weekends they spend more than 2 hours in the automobile to reach their destinations. The car ride is tiresome, and people get frustrated about it. Also driving in circles to find a parking spot is enough to get a person irritated. With autonomous cars the individuals can get out of the car without needing to think about a parking spot, if they wanted to catch a movie they wont be late.
