The first painting I have chosen is Caravaggio, Deposition (or Entombment), c. 1600-04, oil on canvas, 300 x 203 cm (Pinacoteca Vaticana, Vatican City). In this painting, you see a mother laying her child to rest and the sacrifice that he has made to save the people that follow him. The second piece that I have selected is Jackson Pollock painting that I have selected is titled Autumn Rhythm Number 30 created in 1950; it is enamel on canvas with dimensions of 105 x 207 in. (266.7 x 525.8 cm). This painting being that it is a splatter painting can be left to the eye of the beholder and the emotional state that the viewers mind is in. Lastly, I have picked a music video that can be related back to both pieces with or without the music playing
The art piece that I selected for my analysis is called The Triumph of Divine Love by Peter Paul Rubens. The artwork is an oil painting on canvas, circa 1625. This piece of art was commission by Isabella Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain and Portugal. The Triumph of Divine Love was one of eleven art pieces in a series portraying the Eucharist cycle, an important issue in the Catholic-Protestant strife. Its purpose was to aid in the Catholic Reformation and the artwork was to be displayed at the Convento de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. (Ringling Museum n.d.)
My first work is "La Primavera" written by the Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi in 1723. “La Primavera” is one of four violin concertos, each capturing moods and illustrating stories related to a specific time of year. Each section within this movement illustrate the most beautiful scenes of the spring season, including birds, babbling brooks, and a thunderstorm. (Soomo). My second work is an oil on canvas painting, titled “The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone” by Thomas Moran. “The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone” was painted in 1872 and captures the unique geological formations and diverse and extravagant colors of the Midwestern United States landscape. The common theme shared by both of the chosen pieces of work is nature. Antonio Vivaldi embraces the spring season and captures the moods and illustrates stories specific to that time of year. Moran captured the true beauty of a Midwestern landscape of the United States. Although one work is musical piece and the other is a landscape painting, both capture the beauty of nature and the surrounding elements.
The Painting I chose is called “Mixtec Culture.” And it was painted by Diego Rivera in 1942, Mexico. It’s a Fresco style painting, which is “a wall painting technique that has been used for large scale murals since ancient times” (Getlein 159). This entire painting is an homage to the culture of Mexico, specifically the Mixtec people, and that’s what I love about it. The Mixtec people were renowned for their artwork so it’s fitting that Rivera depicts a peaceful community of artists such as mask and jewelry makers. On Painting by Leon Alberti is, in essence, a book of guidelines for novice painters. Alberti explains that since paintings are meant to represent things that are seen, they need also be approached this way. In his theory, he breaks up the way of painting into three important components circumscription, composition, and the reception of light. Within these three are guidelines for the portrayal of subjects, spaces and emotion.
The first painting was of a women painting inside the painting, and it looked liked she was in Egypt, and in one hand the women was holding a compass and in the other was a paper with math on it. The second painting looked like a family traveling somewhere in the 17th century. Both of these paintings were representational art. And both of these artworks also tell a story in a unique way. And there also seems to be hidden messages scattered around these paintings but if you look closely they open a hole new meaning to the art. The second painting looked like it belonged to an artistic tradition due it being English. The first painting was called the Allegory of Geometry, and the artist who made this was Laurent de la Hyre. The second painting was called Landscape with Country Carts, and the artist who created this was Thomas Gainsborough. Thomas Gainsborough personality played a role in creating the art, he was a landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. He also surpassed his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds to become the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century. After doing a visual analysis of the artwork I noticed that the Allegory of Geometry was more sharp than the Landscape with Country Carts, it had more detail in it. First piece is a shallow bowl, hand-coiled and outdoor fired, about 6 inches width, and 2 inches length, and height. The piece was made in america, in 1901 by Nampeyo, in Arizona. The bowl looks almost wooden, the artist probably used brown clay. The painting inside the bowl, looks like a abstract bird form, with a stylized eagle tail. Nampeyo used black and red paint, and a lot of different shapes. Starting from the bottom, it looks like two triangles that curve and join the black thin lines in, the inside rim of the bowl. Above that are two lines probably indicating that she moving on to a different part of the painting, there's a square but its curved in on both sides in the middle there are two half moons, painted red, forming a circle, leaving a uncolored oval

When first addressing these two pieces they look very familiar however when assessing them on a deeper level you can notice the great differences due to time period. The first piece titled “Virgin and Child Enthroned” is a great representation of Italian art. Painted by a Florentine artist Cimabue, the piece is greatly recognized, as it’s believed to be a painting on a high altar of Santa Trinita Church. This piece seems to have heavy Byzantine and Romanesque influence, especially seen with the use of gold. The picture looks unrealistic and stylized with its spatial ambiguities and subtle asymmetries.
The work of art that I chose for my project is a painting called, Bowl of Goldfish by Childe Hassam. It was created in 1912 with oil on canvas. The subject of the painting is a woman inside of a house looking outside of an open window into a field of grass and flowers. While she is staring a bowl of goldfish swim around in a bowl on the middle of a table next her while on the opposite side of the table on a chair, rests a garment. The overall painting showcases the beauty of a calm and peaceful morning.
The first piece I am focusing on is entitled The Death of Socrates. It is painted with oil on canvas by a French artist named Jacques Louis David in 1787. This image depicts the true story of the trial of Socrates. Socrates was an Athenian philosopher and teacher who constantly challenged the beliefs and politics of his state. He sought to teach the youth of Athens his methods of philosophy and politics. The two pieces that I decided to use was; The Sense of Touch by Jusepe de Ribera, and David Slaying Goliath by Peter Paul Rubens. The Sense of Touch by Ribera was created in 1615-1616 in Rome, and David Slaying Goliath was created in 1616 and was created in Flanders. The Sense of Touch is about 45x34 inches, and David slaying Goliath is about 48x39 inches, so a little bit bigger than the one by Ribera. One used the Flemish Baroque and the other one combined the Classical with the Caravaggio. This was because of the time period and which art styles were big where they were and both had big influences on these artists.
One of the most important observations anyone could make while viewing a painting is the artist’s delicate choice and use of colors. In paintings, colors serve two different but equally important purposes. One purpose is to draw attention to the painting, while the other purpose is to display emotions. An artist that understood the importance of color in paintings extremely well was the late talented Vincent Van Gogh. In his painting Café Terrace at Night, Van Gogh incorporates a vast array of colors to arouse emotions from within the audience. In order to assess which colors aroused which emotions two important questions must be answered. What emotions do the specific colors used within the painting give off to the audience? How have the emotions behind the colors been learned through normal human experience over time?
The painting I chose was a painting of Chrysanthemums by Pablo Picasso. It is a very simple and straightforward, yet captivating image. The way the petals on the flowers were painted are very interesting, each of them were created with unique stroke of the brush. Picasso obviously wanted viewers to focus only flowers as the foreground and background were left somewhat rugged and undetailed. At first it may be hard to notice, however, it can be seen that the source of light for the picture is on the left as the right side is painted with slightly darker colors. When positioned directly in front of the painting the flowers actually do not seem as flowers at all. Only until you move farther back will the blurry strokes of white and red actually
