Sociologists observe the world to find a problem or an interesting pattern, then begin to study their findings. They use research methods to design a study, such as a detailed, scientific method for piloting research and obtaining data, or study an outline. The research method is the main step in a sociological study.

A questionnaire is a list of a research or survey questions asked to respondents, and designed to extract quantitative date. Questionnaires are easily distributed to the community and can be completed and collected on the spot or be emailed or posted back to the researcher. Self completed questionnaires are the most common survey as they are cheap and can be passed to a lot of people. Some sociologists tend not to use questionnaires because of their low response rate and lack of validity. Also, some people may give false information so some researchers like to stick to interviews and experiments for increased accuracy. I will explore why sociologists shy away from using questionnaires.

Everyone in the world has a theory about why something happens or how it happens, but in sociology there are many different types of theories that often contradict each other. Theory is defined as “a statement of how and why specific facts are related” (Macionis, 2013). Most theories explain why people act in certain ways and explains why a person in a group may act different than someone that is alone. During this section the readers is introduced to a general research model that sociologists use. However before going in depth on the research model the applications of common sense while doing sociological research must be established. During this paragraph James M. Sociologists have the ability to modify the structures of a society based on their research alone, meaning that sociologists have an immense amount of power.
