“Siiiiiiiiiiiip siiiiiip.” The pieces of chicken from the caldo de pollo dangled from besides her nose and everywhere else. Her shirt was damped with chicken broth that had previously dripped from her spoon as she slurped. As she ate the next spoonful of broth, she brutally licked her lips in order to get that miniscule piece of rice that had escaped her mouth as she held the spoon close to her mouth. Gracie was poor and all her abuelita could afford was chicken, and today she had decided to make the chicken into soup. Gracie enjoyed her pleasant, warm food, but she had a different definition of “enjoying food.” Her definition of enjoying a meal was to eat a meal at any cost including using her hands and licking every single finger. Gracie Martinez began to cry and those tears were tears of sadness because she knew she had no chance at beating Daniel Morgan, the other scholarship candidate, and that she would truly disappoint her grandmother and her mother. She quickly climbed up the stairs and ran towards her room. She looked at herself in the mirror and said, “ Gracie, you are capable of doing anything. Make sure to stand up straight with pride and courage. Always believe in yourself.” Looking back at her clock, she jumped off of her chair, put on her pj’s, and fell instantly asleep.
*beep beep beeep beep beep beep beep beep* Gracie throws her alarm to the floor and takes an extra 10 minute nap. By the time she wakes up again, it is 7:30 am and her interview is at 7:40 am, so she jumps off her bed and hurries to go get changed. Making an entire mess in her room, she does not find the shirt she had picked out the night before, so she puts on her t-shirt with food stains. She forgets to comb her hair and to brush her teeth, so she isn’t going to make a good impression, but now, it is up to her to impress Robert by using her high vocabulary and smart ways of thinking. She headed to the restaurant one last time and took all of the applications with her as well as her new way of eating. Gracie slowly worked on looking over the submitted applications that she had previously agreed to work on in order to look good in front of Robert and hopefully have an advantage. She read name name by name and the grade level that was written on the corner of the paper. She separated them according to the grades, as said by Robert when she offered to help. As she was working on her assignment, she enjoyed a warm bowl of caldo de pollo. Although she was eating the same meal as the day before, she was now eating with posture and manners. As she got the next spoonful, she moved the spoon closer and closer to her mouth. The moment it got to her mouth there was silence. No noise came out of her mouth and it was because she didn’t slurp. At the same time she ate, she was working on the organization of the applications and hopefully doing a favor for Robert would make her look good and give her an extra advantage.
