Ayrshire cattle -Origination Ayrshire cattle were first located in Ayrshire Scotland before the 1800’s. It was first referred to as the Dunlop, then the Cuningham and eventually took on the name of the Ayrshire Dairy Cow. -History in US Ayrshires were first introduced to America in the early 19th century by scottish settlers that were migrating to canada. These dairy cows quickly inhabited Canada, but years later many ended up getting shipped off towards northern New York and New England in America. In America the Ayrshire bovine has had a decline in the last 30 years, and there are only about 2,500 ayrshire bovine living in the US. -Breed Guidelines Purebred Ayrshire bovine produce only reddish-brown and white calfs. The reddish-brown can vary from a very light reddish-brown to a very dark reddish-brown. Once fully mature Ayrshire cows can be over 1200 pounds as they are a mid ranged bovine. It suddenly became apparent about 120 years ago in the late 1800’s. Switzerland had originally referred to it as the Schwyer or the Brown Schwyzer. -History In The US The first brown swiss bovine were brought to America in 1869 was by Henry M. Clark. He went to Schwyz the capital of switzerland and was able to get his hands on one bull and seven females. He later registered his bull and all seven females in the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association. The cattle were later sold to people all over the US. Later in 1906 a man by the name E.M. Barton brought over to America thirty four cows and five bulls. His daughters later continued to breed the cattle which made a huge impact on the brown swiss. To this day there are currently almost 2 million head of brown swiss in america alone, with iowa wisconsin and ohio having the highest concentration -Breed
