Aztec, Maya, And Incan Civilizations : Similarities And Differences In Latin American Cultures

Decent Essays

Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, there were three civilizations based in Latin America that contributed to our current world. The Aztec, Maya, and Incan civilizations were three of the most dominant and culturally advanced societies during the Middle Ages. These ancient societies of the Americas all had important features that contributed to them being dominant cultures. There are many differences and similarities between them, including class structure, religion, writing, gender roles, etc. The class structure in the Aztecs, Maya, and Incan civilizations had more similarities than differences. The hierarchy of the civilizations started with an emperor or ruler at the peak of the society. The emperor was the at the top of the pyramid, the most important person. The next tier on the social hierarchy pyramid is the nobles and priests. In the Aztec society, military commanders were just as significant and eminent (Bentley, Ziegler, and Streets-Salter, p. 312). The tier following the nobles and priests differed depending on the civilizations. The Mayan society then placed merchants and artisans as the next level of notable people. In both the Aztec and Incan societies, the commoners came next. Directly following the merchants and commoners in the Aztec and Mayan societies came the peasants. In the Incan civilization, the class structure ended at commoners. Finally, the last level of the pyramid ended in low-ranking slaves (Bentley, Ziegler, and Streets-Salter, p. 318).
