B. S. In Music Production

Two of my long-range goals are to spread the joy of playing music and to make a difference in this world through research and development of environment-friendly technology. Continuance of my education in music is essential for me to become more proficient as a musician, and through this journey I will have more opportunities to share the joy I experience through music. Likewise, academic training in a STEM field, specifically engineering, will allow me to move in the direction of developing technology that will sustain the environment for future generations as well as harness renewable energy thus minimizing our negative footprint on Earth.

Standing amongst musically-adept buildings that easily dwarf it and construction that does not help its aged appearance, the Schmidt Vocal Arts Center (SVAC) operates as a rehearsal, office, and studio spot for all vocal students—major and minor alike. Much like many music facilities, its fate lies in the hands of financial executives who make decisions which generally result in the defunding of programs that the SVAC houses. As a result, the SVAC has tremendous pressure to provide a quality education with depleting funds. The SVAC combats this by utilizing an artistic internal atmosphere in the attempt of inspiring music students to remain within the music department and to establish the creative arts as a necessity within both university and personal life.

The lone subject matter I am interested in studying at MTSU is audio production. I aspire to apply the knowledge I acquire from my studies at MTSU to be an audio engineer. Ever since I was young, music has had a substantial impact on my life. Throughout middle school, I was bullied for my preference of music: metal. I was deemed gothic, satanic, and a devil-worshipper because of my musical taste. I have never been gothic; I have never worshipped satan or the devil. Music, specifically metal, is an outlet for my emotions. The sole entity that helped me to overcome that part of my life was, in fact, metal, the genre of music which had labeled me as a disciple of satan. That ordeal is what motivated me to pursue my passion for music.

There are certain cities in the United States that have a very strong musical history. Los Angeles, New York, and Memphis have long been associated with some of the finest singers and songwriters in American history and will be for centuries to come. However, there is one southeastern city which has more recently cemented its place in America’s musical yearbook: Miami.

The U of A has a music program that stands out from the others. With the music program you are able to learn how to write music, also known as music notation. They also do what is called music technology. Music technology is a combination of sound boards, different sound systems, and electric hook ups. In the music program they also have what is called music performance. Examples of music performance would be, concerts, live speaking, live shows included also would be any type of choir and band. Choosing a school for a lifetime career is difficult. There are some great schools out there but it just feels like it is not the one. I never thought in my life that I would be looking up schools for music. I always looked up schools with an accounting program. I’m not so sure what would be a great school for music. Going to a university for music doesn’t seem like something I want to do. I don’t want someone to tell me how they want me to compose the music they like. I want to compose the music I like. To me, music doesn’t really require a degree but I guess to other it does.

In order to remedy deficits in undergraduate training, some music therapists chose to explore graduate programs (Bruscia, 1989). Bruscia (1987) proposed that the bachelor’s degree in music therapy should function as preparation for the master’s degree, and thus provide a broad-based education for the development of musical and therapeutic skills. According to James Madison University's website, Music is a very prominent entity embedded in millions’ of people’s lives. Music has the ability to change a person’s emotions, just through the different chords, lyrics, and structure. Over time, society has generated many different uses for music, one being its benefit in the therapeutic field. One unique occupation, that I personally have taken an interest in, would be profession in music therapy.. As a result of my creative, music oriented, sensitive and idealistic nature, I have decided to further my pursuit of a career in the field of Music Therapy at the reputable James Madison University. Ultimately, my goal is to help people conquer their fears, emotional damage, disorders and mental disabilities through music.

Wartburg College is nestled in the small Iowa city of Waverly population 10,106. The small campus of 1,482 is arranged so it is very close together and most buildings are connected by skywalks. Since the private college is so small, the average class size is eighteen, and the student to faculty ratio is an impressive 11:1. Of the 1,482 students at Warburg College around 450 are involved in music in some way. This shows a strong emphasis on and belief in music. There are currently fifteen choral and instrumental ensembles at Wartburg and there is always potential to be more. They allow people to form music ensembles and have them supported by the school if a faculty member will sponsor it. They even have a community symphony that some
