The Oxford English Dictionary defines the term “baby boom” as a “temporary increase in the birth rate.” The end of the Second World War brought a baby boom to many countries, especially Western countries such as the United States. As soldiers returned home to their loving families and significant others, they were eager to put the trauma and the horrors of the war behind them and start anew. The marriage rate started to skyrocket almost immediately after the war was over, resulting in an increase in the birth rate as well. This increase did not see a decline until more than a decade later. By the end of the 1950s, the birth rate of the United States had hit an unprecedented high, as more than 50 million new births were documented.
