The Frank’s made a bad decision in letting the Van Daan’s live in the secret annex with them because of conflicts, noise trouble and space issues. One reason that the Franks made a bad decision is because of conflicts between characters. For example, in the play Mr. Van Daan says to Anne, “This isn’t a quarrel! It’s a discussion. And I never heard children so rude before (386).” The quote shows how Anne and Mr. Van Daan were arguing and creating conflict, which tells how letting the Van Daans stay with the Franks wasn’t a smart idea. Similarly, another example of how the Franks made a bad decision is because of space issues. In the play, Anne states to Mrs. Frank, “I’ll come in here with you and Mother, and Margot can take Peter’s room and Peter can go in the room with Mr. Dussel (390).” The text displays how there is not adequate space for both families to live plus Mr. Dussel, which proves that allowing the Van Daan’s to live with them was a bad decision made by the Franks. On the other hand, some people may think that it was a good idea for the Van Daans to live with the Franks. An example is, “Anne. Peter, where are you going?
Van Daan was always in a bad mood when having no cigarettes, but based on history, Mr. Van Daan tried to stay optimistic, gave advice, had a sense of humor, and always did what’s best for all of them. One example of Mr. Van Daan doing what’s best for everyone and trying to protect everyone is during a scary situation when burglars were robbing the building which the Secret Annex was located. According to Anne’s diary, “Without thinking, Mr. van Daan yelled "Police!" Hurried footsteps outside; the burglars had fled. The board was put back in the door so the police wouldn't notice the gap, but then a swift kick from outside sent it flying to the floor”(Frank). This diary entry shows that instead of hiding and trying and letting Otto Frank attempt to protect them like the play displays, he is brave and tries to scare the burglars away. The play exaggerates how selfish Mr. Van Daan is, if he was at all. The play probably exaggerates Mr. Van Daan’s selfishness to create drama in the Annex, making the play more enjoyable. Furthermore, while Mr. Van Daan was portrayed incorrectly for being selfish, he was portrayed correctly for not getting along with Anne in the play, as the diary has many entries about their
I never heard such a child. ”(page 387). This shows that Mr. Van Daan did not like Anne and would get mad at her a lot. It was not good for the Franks to have let the Van Daans stay with them if most of their family hates one of their daughters.
The play, “The Diary of Anne Frank” tells the story of a girl named Anne Frank and the events that occur during her time hiding from the Nazis in the Holocaust with her family, the Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel. While the two families were in hiding, they all suffered tremendously with limited food portions and the need to remain quiet in order to not get caught. During this period, if a person were to be not fit in the Aryan race, which consists of blonde hair, blue eyes, and tallness, then they were to be sent to concentration camps or be killed. Although all of the characters were put into the same circumstances, Mr. Van Daan drastically took advantage of the rest of the Annex. He was portrayed to be selfish and gluttonous because of the fact that he would do anything in order to obtain cigarettes and because he has been given or taking a significant amount of food that is supposed to be for the whole Annex. .
I enjoyed the playwrights adding in Mr. Van Daan stealing food. It changed the whole mood of the story. Everyone liked Mr. Van Daan until they saw that side of him. Everyone was arguing with each other. Anne was mad at her mother because she didn’t want Peter to go. Mrs. Frank was mad at Mr. Van Daan because she felt her family had been mistreated.
2.Otto Frank and “Putti” Van Daan are the fathers of the families. Mr. Frank’s family consists of two daughters, Anne and Margot, and his wife. The members in Mr. Van Daan’s family include his son, Peter, and his wife. When combined and put into a cramped region they are bound to find trouble. With limited amount of food, the members of the families needed to divide the food evenly. This did not satisfy Mr. Van Daan. One night he was caught red handed stealing bread from the cabinet. This
In the play “Anne Frank” they are located in Amsterdam July 6th 1942. They are in hiding in what is called the Annex during WWII. The people at the Annex are Anne Frank, Margot Frank, Mr.Frank and Mrs. Frank, Peter Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, Mrs. Van Daan, and Mr Dussel, we know this because Mr. Frank gave Anne Frank a diary and she wrote in the diary a lot giving us this information. In times like this, you would need lots of Courage, Compassion, and Sacrifice to get through the tough times.
When Mr. Frank invites other Jews to stay in his hiding place, he is taking a big risk. One family that they welcome into the attic is the Van Daan family. The Franks were so kind as to go out of their way to save a family and hide them from
Frank, Mrs. Frank, Margot Frank, Anne Frank, Mrs. Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, Peter Van Daan, and Mr. Dussel. There were two characters that were not hiding but helped the group their names were Miep and Mr. Kraler. The evil in this group was how they treated each other when another was at fault. In the play, Mrs. Van Daan let Anne wear her nice fur coat that she got from her father and Anne accidentally got some milk on it. She got mad at Anne but that is reasonable but she was angry with everyone else for no reason which is not fair towards the other people in the house. The good in the group would mostly come from Mr. Frank because he was a leader towards the group and tried to solve all the problems. A part of the play Mr. Frank tried to reason with everyone so that they were all happy and would stay happy in the Annex. Although there were lots of people in the Annex they all tried and cope with each other in a reasonable matter.
When you realize how Otto Frank deals with problems, he starts to look like the bad guy. Because, Mr. Frank let fights in the annex continue. Such as with the Van Daan's. “Van Daan's discussions are as violent as ever.” We do not actively see Otto Frank, or Edith Frank, do anything about this.
The course of life between the occupants in the Secret Annex was filled with happiness and festivities, but also many quarrels between them. Although each character has had differentiation and similarities with others, Mr. Van Daan and Mr. Dussel have discernible character traits throughout the play. Whereas their fears and judgements akin, the two men have unalike responsibilities, especially with Mr. Van Daan needing to be a father. Propitiously, their true characters are shown as a result of their actions,
Living within the Secret Annex wasn 't the easiest thing ever done. Secrets were kept, stories were revealed, things changed in the Frank 's life and the Van Danns life. Not everyone got along well in the secret annex. There were limitations and restrictions they all had to follow. The room annex wasn 't a huge house, they had to share lots of things. Many fears would show through all of
and Mrs. Frank sleep in the main area. Mr. Frank answers their questions, that “Please. I’ve thought this out for weeks. It’s the best arrangement. The only arrangement,” (Goodrich, PDF 707). Instead of making the Van Daans sleep in the main room, the Franks sacrifice their own living space for the other family. They are willing to give away their own comfort and personal needs for the Van Daans to have their own privacy. Meanwhile, later on, a woman, Miep, brings things for the group in the annex, while risking her life to do so. We hear this in one of Anne Frank’s diary entries. She writes that, “The people from whom Miep got our ration books have been arrested. So we have had to cut down on food supply,” (Goodrich, 497). Miep had been risking her life to get these ration books, illegally, for the family, and now has to find a way to get more food for the family while Mr. Kraler, another caretaker of the family, is in the hospital. Miep had befriended Anne and the family, and was willing to put everything on the line just for them. On more recent terms, a football coach of the recent Florida school shooting, was truly a hero and sacrificed his own life for the students of the school. In the
In the first 80 pages of Anne Frank, the Franks moved out of their home and are living in the “Secret Annexe”. The Van Daans moved in with them four days later. Four months after that, Albert Dussel moved in too. With everyone living in such a small space, they get into fights alot.
The character, Anne Frank is immensely unpleasant in this scene because she steals articles that belong to another character. For example, the stage directions state, “Peter goes after her. Anne, with his shoes in her hand…” (Act 1 scene 3). Since Anne steals Peter’s shoes, Peter is irritated with her. But Anne, being uncooperative, refuses to give his shoes back, but instead runs around the annex with them. This is extremely unreasonable since Anne has nothing to do with the shoes yet still takes them simply with the motive to irritate Peter. Another example of Anne stealing other character’s items is, “She [Anne] is dressed in Peter’s clothes.
Mrs. Frank also accuses Mrs. Van Dan for giving her husband more food than anyone else. As Anne hears that she starts to protest and declares to her mother that she will not tolerate if the Van Dan's get kicked out because she doesn't want Peter to leave. Her mother agrees that Peter has
