The animals of Australia have a bad reputation for being very threatening, but in reality they are not as dangerous as people make them out to be. There are many factors and facts that people do not know or do not take into consideration about these animals, and that can have a big effect on Australia's environmental reputation. Some of those factors and facts include not listening to warning signs, not realizing how little animals attack compared to everyday activities, and also not taking into consideration that most animals only attack when threatened, so do not do anything to threaten them. All of that can cause people to think poorly about Australia which is not good. There are many aquatic animals that people are deathly afraid of but …show more content…
Two of those people were grown men, but one of the victims was a young girl. The girl was 13 years of age and she was attacked by a great white shark. All she had to do was kick and since sharks hate it when they are being fought against, it started to back away giving the girl enough time to kick it in the nose and then swim away. The girl came out with a only a minor leg injury, which is great considering she was so young and went up against one of the deadliest sharks. The girl was swimming in an area where there were signs that told her not to go past, but she did anyways. The girl did not listen to the signs, and that is how she had gotten hurt. If she had listened to the signs, there would not have been an attack (Malkin). Also, “According to Australian Geographic, 877 shark attacks have occurred since 1791 but only 216 have been fatal…. That's about 1 fatality a year.” (Schoenman) Normally, people would read that there have been 877 shark attacks in Australia and they would be freaked out because of it, but if you look at the statistic it is not that bad. There has only been about 1 fatality a year due to sharks in Australia compared to the
“Today nearly 40% of shark species are threatened with extinction.” (7) Bethany Hamilton was a 13 year old girl, who loved to surf. She lived in Kauai, Hawaii. Bethany was winning major amateur surf contests by her 10th birthday. One day she was on her surf board, a 15-foot tiger shark was stalking her. The shark then attacked her. Bethany was calm when it happened. The shark took off her whole arm in one bite. Despite the devastating shark attack, Bethany Hamilton showed great resilience in achieving her surfing dream.
On the morning of Halloween in 2003 was the scariest moment in Bethany’s life. She and her friend Alana went surfing in that morning. She was waiting for a good wave, then out of nowhere a fourteen foot long tiger shark came up and ripped Bethany’s arm off. Bethany was rushed to the hospital and was losing lots of blood. Bethany had to have an amputation, a surgical removal of a body part. It is regular to the U.S to see shark attacks. They see attack like about thirty to forty times a year (Doyle). It has affected
Not many people get attacked by sharks, but unfortunately for Bethany Hamilton she did. Bethany who was only 13 at the time was with her friend and her friend’s family surfing. She was happily on her board when a 15 foot tiger shark started watching her. She didn’t notice when the shark jumped and bite her arm off. Bethany Hamilton is obviously a resilient person because Bethany was motivated to surf less than one month after her shark attack; she was also very confident in herself even though she was an amputee, and she showed bravery in moving forward and becoming one of the top notch surfers.
Over the past 100 years sharks attack numbers, though rare, have been increasing. Ironically two of the most recent attacks have happened this month, which is the 40 year anniversary of the movie Jaws. these two attacks happened at Oak Island in North Carolina. The two attacks were at different times, only by hours, but on the same beach. It’s suspected that either a tiger or bull shark had attacked these two teen girls, but usually great white, lemon, spinner sharks are to blame for human attacks. Attacks this year had also been performed by a nurse and mako shark. Most attacks are categorized as “provoked attacks.” This is like a shark getting a shark bite during spearfishing, shark catching, or even releasing it from a line. Sharks accidentally
A 67-year-old Massachusetts man was the victim of a shark attack in North Carolina on Wednesday. According to witnesses, the man was swimming in the water on Ocracoke Island. He was just outside the first breaker when he encountered a gray shark approximately seven feet long. Hyde County spokeswoman, Sarah Johnson, said that it pulled the man under water. As the man attempted to fight the shark off, he suffered bites to his rib cage, both hands, lower leg and hip. He was conscious and speaking when he was flown to the hospital.
An encounter with a shark is not something that many people really want to experience. The movie Jaws definitely put the fear of the ocean into many people. Sharks have been all over the media lately; Shark Week on the Discovery Channel just ended, and several attacks have been reported over the last few months. However, on a happier note, a beached Great White was saved this weekend in Cape Cod by beachgoers who sympathized with the struggling animal.
what do you think when you here shark mabey killer, food, medsin. But what i am going to be talk about out of those 3 word is killer and not because that is what I think of shark it is what I think of humans when it comes to humans killing sharks or sharks killing humans, humans kill more sharks and I will tell the wrong in your waze. I think that sharks mistake people for pray. Sharks look for any meal they can get so when they see a surfer and they think seal or turtle. This evidences show that sometimes when you here of a fatal shark attack it can be an accident just an animal seeing some food like how us humans hunt for deer or turkey it is so you don’t starve same goes when sharks are hunting they are looking for food
The documentary SharkWater follows underwater photographer, Rob Stewart, as he shares his passion for sharks and how they are not as dangerous as they seem. In the documentary, Stewart talks about how sharks are some of the world’s oldest species. Throughout history and in the media, sharks have been depicted as monsters whose only purpose to kill. Stewart shares that this is not the case. Sharks are more scared of humans than we are of them and it is unlikely that a shark would approach someone in the water.
Today nearly 40 percent of shark species are threatened with extinction. One of the dangerous sharks is the tiger shark. Bethany Hamilton was a 13 year old girl she was attacked by a tiger shark. Although Bethany Hamilton got attacked by a shark she showed resilience in chasing her dream to go surfing.
Picture the beach, the golden sand and aqua water, the warm bright sun in the background, Imagine what is under the water, the aqua clear waters and the little fishes, but instead the ocean is full of nets capturing these harmless sharks. This is redicious to capture and kill these native Australian sharks. Shark culling has become the new issue for Australian media. Shark culling is not the answer for safer oceans.
The probability of being attacked by a shark is minimal; according to the Wildlife Museum, the chances are about 1 to 1.8 million chances. Their article “What Are The Odds of A Shark Attack” provides more statistics showing that a person is more likely to die from a heart disease than a shark attack. Of course, no common person knows this information, so it is assumed the number of
According to the author Peter Benchley, he thought that people thought sharks are blood-thirsty killers. People would kill sharks for the fun of it, but sharks would kill or injure humans mistakenly. Sharks would think that a human was different prey. Most shark bites are one bite.
Each year more people are killed by getting electrocuted by a christmas tree than a shark attack. Meaning they aren’t very common. You don’t have to not swim in the ocean, just be sure to follow tips, and don’t go too deep. Also try to recycle more as it will reduce water pollution, causing sharks to stay in their lane. There are so many things that cause shark attacks, so many things that us humans do, not sharks. Sharks being carnivores are not natural predators of
Sharks are vicious creatures and eat humans. Don’t go into the water if you see a shark nearby or they will come after you. These are a few of the many things you will hear from the television or even people you may know. Humans are not a part of the shark diet so it is highly unlikely that a shark would randomly go after a human. The media likes to make their shark stories more exciting by adding words like “aggressive” or “threatened.” There was a total of 4 deaths caused by sharks in 2014 which is a large contrast to the 11,417 sharks that are killed per hour by humans. sharks) need to be preserved and protected in order to preserve our oceans. Laws that are more strict should be implemented in order to achieve this goal.
Shark attacks still happen to this day. There’s nothing more terrifying than hearing a story in the news of a mighty, great white shark killing an innocent person. He mentions the backlash of Hollywood blockbusters such as “Jaws” and “Sharknado 3” that intensifies one’s fear. Sharks have evolved in our
