Matt de la Peña has a captivating read with “Ball don’t Lie.” This is a feel-good book that will be a big hit among other basketball players. However it isn’t just for basketball fans. The dynamic storyline will have any reader unable to put the book down. 17 year old “Sticky” has spent most of his life in multiple foster homes after viewing his mom dead in their bathtub. He has had a rough life, and he knows it, but all he ever wants to know is basketball. Fortunately, he has been blessed with some amazing basketball talent. That even gets the “real-deal” hoopers at the local recreation center to pick him up for their daily 5 on 5 games. Sticky believes basketball is his way out. But, getting out will require him to ditch his unlawful ways and earn respect from his foster families. On top of all this, Sticky has an embarrassing case of OCD and a girlfriend named “Anh-Thu” that almost seems to be too good for him. …show more content…
He receives advice and guidance from all of the “guys” at the court. As the reader, it gets a bit difficult remembering all of the names of the different players. As they all have very different personalities and different relationships with Sticky. Additionally, the book tends to jump years every chapter. For example, right after a chapter that was in present time, Matt de la Peña traveled back in time to when Sticky was begging for money on the streets, just for his mom to use for drugs. This is certainly annoying and confusing, especially at the beginning, but it gets easier to follow as the book goes on. In contrast, I did enjoy the stories in the
The book starts off with Coach Giminski shouting out “Layup Drill” louder than all the basketballs on the court pounding against the wall the floor, the backboard, and the net: everything! After a bunch of failed attempts Brett Carter the star forward of the team and also best friend of the coaches son Will Giminski got the final 20 for the team. The coach seemed impressed so he thought his techniques were getting a little rusty and that he might need to step it up so in the scrimmage he decided that he doesn’t want make it easy for the team… He puts Brett Carter and Will Giminski as team captains

"Slam" by Walter Dean Myers is a book that shows a collection of styles of writings, and different techniques used by the author. There were many great characters in the book, also. This book is about a seventeen year old boy named Greg, who revolves around the game of basketball. He lives in Harlem and attends the prestigious magnet school Latimer in the South Bronx, which is predominantly white. He leads the school to great wins, even his former school. His best friend Ice starts to sell drugs, so they drift apart. When his grandmother got sick, his assistant coach became a fatherly mentor to him. He expresses that the game of life can either be won, or it can be lost.
He plays until it gets dark and starts as soon as the sun comes up. His mom dyes and he doesn’t tell anyone. So he’s living on his own, stealing things to get by. One day he decides he needs a new pair of sneakers for the season and goes to the Footlocker on the other side of town. When he try’s to steal them he gets caught. This forces him to either go to a group home, or get adopted right away. The Lawton’s adopted him. They are very nice but Jayson isn’t accepting them like he should. He starts off hating his new school and his new teammates. Soon he gets along with them and meets a friend named Zoe. Zoe is really nice even when Jayson is mean. Soon Jayson and Zoe are dating and Jayson finds out that Zoe’s parents want her to be perfect. A couple of weeks later Jayson over hears Zoe’s mom talking about how Jayson is a thief and a drug dealer. The thief part was right but the drugs were not. Zoe didn’t talk to him again. This made Jayson focus on basketball just so he didn’t think about Zoe. He won the league championship against his old team in the final

Hands: Basketball and his dad's empty beer bottle A basketball is one of the most important items in Rowdy’s life because it motivates him to do well. The game not only offers him a temporary escape from his troubles, but also provides a sense of purpose and a way to cope with his anger and frustration. At the end of the book, “Rowdy and [Junior] played one-on-one for hours” (Alexie 230). This exemplifies how Rowdy will play whenever he has a chance to keep up his skills and keep his mind off of his abusive dad. Playing basketball with Junior gives Rowdy an activity to keep his mind off his chaos life and allows Rowdy to forget his struggles.
Matthew Quick is the author of this book. Quick loved basketball as a kid and sometimes still imagines himself shooting hoops with his dad in the backyard. The book Boy 21 is about a boy named Finley. Finley is a senior in high school and starting point guard on the basketball team. Then a star basketball player moves to town and changes everything, but he thinks he’s from outer space. Boy 21 should be preserved because it can motivate people in the future, the book shows that basketball is more than just a game to some people. Lastly, it reminds people that talent isn’t just handed to you, you have to work for it.
You need all these skills for basketball because without communication and teamwork you want have a good team which means no wins. Work ethic is important because in basketball you have to work hard. You might can shoot but not dribble that is why you work hard on dribbling instead of shooting. Safety and health is important because if your health is bad your safety is bad. Self-motivation is key because if you don’t have any you want do well. You have to motivate yourself to do good.

Tiffany Dufu, in her 2017 book, Drop The Ball, shares an exercise where she asked her friends and colleagues to share a time when they remember her being her best self. It helped her determine what she does best and what is most important to her. Book is worth reading and although I haven’t tried this exercise, it is

In “Conversational Ballgames,” Nancy Sakamoto explains how difficult it is to hold a conversation of different languages. At first, she mentions how her Japanese had improved to where she could have simple conversations with her friends and family. She then noticed a problem with the way she was speaking to others. Nancy compares Western style conversations with a game of tennis. As one started the topic, the other person which is the “opponent” throws back an answer; it doesn’t matter if the response is an agreement or a remark. A tennis game goes back and forth as well as the conversation. Nancy also mentions that if there are more people in the conversation, it is like a volleyball game. In addition, she also compares Japanese conversations
