Banning the Smoke
Smoking cigarettes has been a huge public health issue in America for many years. They should be banned for they’ve caused many people their lives. The United States government along with other countries like the UK have moved towards a ban on cigarette smoking in public places. Defender of this approach argue that smoking cigarettes cause health risks for non-smokers. This may lead to a major economic consideration for Tobacco is the second major cause of mortality in the world. “[Tobacco] imposes a terrible toll in health, lives and dollars on families, business and government. Tobacco kills more than 400,000 people annually — more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined.” …show more content…

Some people find it hard to quit or just don’t want to quit. There are several groups that’ll oppose the banning of cigarettes, mostly the people who have a pack a day but then there’s a select few that’ll have an occasional cigarette. No matter how deadly they may be people love to smoke. Government-imposed smoking bans cannot be justified as responses to market failure, as a means of shaping favorites, or on risk reduction grounds. Smoking bans reduce public welfare by preventing an optimal distribution of nonsmoking and smoking- permitted public places. An unrestrictive charged with approach has to accommodate heterogeneous preferences. When it comes to indoor air pollution, by contrast, there is no such externality. Therefore, individuals charged with determining how much, if any, smoking is permitted in an indoor environment ultimately bears the full responsibility of his or her own decision; and for this reason alone they should opt for the optimal level of air cleanliness. Moreover nonsmokers’ “rights” are not violated. “A just government does not have the authority to ban smoking on private property or tell smokers to quit or to punish them if they do not. Smokers are adults, not children, and they deserve to have their informed choices respected by others.” This would be great if smokers’ informed choice to smoke didn’t harm people around them as well their selves.
