Bar/Bat Mitzvah: The Rites Of Passage

Within Judaism the Bar/Bat Mitzvah is considered the traditional rite of passage for adolescents who transition into adulthood. The term Bar/Bat Mitzvah means “son or daughter of the commandment or duty”. The origin of this rite is obscure, but there are references in the Talmud, books containing Jewish laws, to 13 years as the age of majority (Mail, 1997). In providing further context, Mail (1997) references ethnographer Arnold Van Gennep, author of The Rites of Passage, stating “… three successive and distinct moments in the occurrence of rites of passage: separation, liminality, and aggregation.
