Within Judaism the Bar/Bat Mitzvah is considered the traditional rite of passage for adolescents who transition into adulthood. The term Bar/Bat Mitzvah means “son or daughter of the commandment or duty”. The origin of this rite is obscure, but there are references in the Talmud, books containing Jewish laws, to 13 years as the age of majority (Mail, 1997). In providing further context, Mail (1997) references ethnographer Arnold Van Gennep, author of The Rites of Passage, stating “… three successive and distinct moments in the occurrence of rites of passage: separation, liminality, and aggregation. Van Gennep would describe the start of instruction and preparation for Bar/Bat Mitzvah as commencing the separation between childhood and maturity…the
7-14 years --- By this stage, children have stable friendships, enthusiasm when given areas of responsibility and clear different activities between boys and girls.
Most common cultures have rituals, celebrations, or traditional ceremonies to acknowledge the coming of age of boys and/or girls. The Hispanic culture have a traditional “Quinceañera” for young teenage girls turning age 15 to recognize her coming of age as a woman. Jews have “Bar Mitzvah” for men or “Bat Mitzvah” for women to celebrate coming of age. Although in some cultures, celebrating coming age is nothing less than actually celebrating; but in other cultures, such as Aborigine culture, rather than having a huge celebration, young teenage boys, age thirteen, are enduring an essential evaluation. In this stage of their life, their elders test them to see if they are “man” enough to survive by themselves.
7-15 year old (in some cases, a maximum of 17years) young people are confined under this Law. The courts, as the judicial role of parents, had to decide whether the young people should bear the consequences for their crimes. If the judge found that the minor's conduct had constituted a crime, then he could order him or her into the juvenile correctional homes until the relevant authorities agreed the criminal juvenile could be released. The law assumed the responsibility of the parents that they should determine the care of young people in terms of education and the linkages with their families (Sayson, 2006, p.6).
For instance, the normal age of adulthood: eighteen, which was once twenty-one according to Alan Greenblatt “Aristotle wrote of 21 as the age when a person would have completed three 7-year stages of youth development [...] because that’s when men were capable of wearing a full suit of armor” (Par. 7). Also what he mentioned was that during the twentieth century was that due to eighteen year olds joining the military to fight in World War II, they also began to start raising their own families, which since then became known as the milestone of adulthood. Unfortunately the rite of this milestone clearly wasn’t a good choice as several people nowadays disobey laws such as the drinking age, resulting in more injuries and deaths caused by drinking and driving. Not to mention that due to the fact that the brain isn’t biologically developed fully until the age of twenty-five, eighteen year olds tend to make the silly and illogical mistakes they made as
Progressing on from 12, children are at a vulnerable stage with self-esteem. Their bodies will be changing and they will be making decisions about their futures. Boys will be starting to go through puberty whilst many girls will have completed the process. Communication and intellectual development has slightly different brackets, ages 12-18 laps over with 16-19. Young people will usually have an idea about their favourite subjects and are motivated in those areas, making sure they achieve good results. This enables them to carry over their achievements to their career choice, focussing on
Maturity is a state that everybody tries to reach during their lives. Children spend their infancy, and sometimes adolescence, growing up and learning how to behave in the adults and work world. Schools teach them dissimilarities between these two different worlds. There isn’t a precise age in which kids become mature, it depends on the experiences they had, their society, their family and other causes. In the movie and novel The Giver, the community has a rite of passage where children, during the annual ceremony, become more mature and assume more responsibilities until they get into adulthood.
16-19 years most girls have reached maturity but the boys grow up to 25 years old.
16-19 years | This is the stage where young people become young adults, and are often at the peak of their physical performance. Almost all girls will have reached physical maturity, boys will continue to mature into their mid-20 's. | By the time they have left school they will be thinking about their pathway for their career, whether it involves college or university. | Young people enter adulthood but still require advise and guidance from adults. If society was asked what defines “coming of age,” what would it say? Some would say people come of age when they act more mature, think grown up thoughts, or do certain actions. This quote by someone unknown helps form an explanation of what coming of age is: “Maturity doesn’t mean age; it means sensitivity, manners, and how you react.” In the literature piece “The First Part Last,” the author Angela Johnson writes about two teenagers, Bobby and Nia, who struggle with the difficulties of teen pregnancy. Throughout the book, they both face many hardships that put their relationship, patience, and responsibility to the test. With the help of a red balloon, a basketball, and family pictures in a doctor’s office, Bobby comes of age after paying attention to these symbols and signs throughout the novel.
Rituals around the world all teach valuable lessons that help initiates see the value and importance of life. Each culture has different rituals that provide experiences for their youth to learn these valuable lessons of life. Many coming of age rituals are intense procedures. The Amazon's Satere Mawé youth enter adulthood through the bullet-ant glove initiation, teaching courage and endurance, and the crocodile scaring ritual that the men from the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea participate in teaches them pain and accomplishment.

In various cultures, heavy importance is placed on the transition from child to adult. A young person’s coming of age and the ceremonies which may follow can embody a highly important, enlightening, and maybe even confusing period of time for the person undertaking these rites of passage. This type of coming of age ceremony holds a very high importance to the followers of Judaism as it signifies the transition of a young boy into a young man, or a young girl into a young woman, it is known as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, which means “son of commandment” or “daughter of commandment”, and thus the person undergoing the ceremony is known as the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. As is hebrew custom, the age of
Coming of age is our minds and bodies evolving into a more mature person. It isn’t based off age, but more of experience and knowledge. Most of the time, coming of age is more profound in the young due to the transition from childhood to adulthood. During this transition, they have their first experience of
Adolescence is not cultural universal. In some societies, young children go straight from childhood to the adult life once they have done the necessary puberty rites. Puberty rites are formal ceremonies that mark the entrance of young
The time in which a boy becomes a man, varies depending on what part of the world you live in. It could depend on customs done within one 's culture or on laws from someone 's country/state. In the United States, the legal age in which a child 's actions (male or female) are on the same level of disciplinary actions as fully grown adults is 18 years of age. I 've had 18 different birthday parties. Ironically, the most recent one will be the party that stays in my mind for decades later on in my lifetime. With all the activities for us humans to do here on Earth, it seems to get more difficult annually to be able to gather all your loved ones in one place. Just think about it, you can travel to the ends of the planet and see everything this world has to offer. Everything from the "Great Pyramids ' of Egypt to the 'Leaning Tower of Pisa ' in Italy. Technology has improved so drastically within our hundred years. Things like the iPhone and PC Computers didn 't exist before our time and that 's just the beginning. The possibilities of new inventions is endless, meaning that it might be that much harder to keep your loved ones close. Making what happened for me personally on my 18th birthday that much more special to me.
