The majority of the life of a pirate is spent at sea. Most pirates’ made their money from taking over ships of other people and selling illegal goods which were usually stolen from the ships. Pirates needed to be able to travel on sea and explore new areas, they would have encounters with the ships they are trying to capture, and they would exchange illegal goods and slaves. One infamous group of pirates, the Barbary Pirates, was so good at their job that they were seen as a threat to the major governments of the world. The Barbary Pirates formed in the 12th century but were still very weak at the time. Many years later, they are seen as one of the most troublesome pirate crews of the 17th century. While Thomas Jefferson was Secretary of State, he was able to keep the Barbary Pirates from getting too out of hand and uncontrollable. These actions showed the American people that Jefferson was fit to govern their country and gave him a boost in the election when he decided to run. Jefferson became president ended up affecting how the country turned out in the future, this would cause modern Americans to have an interest in the Barbary Pirates. The encounter between the Barbary Pirates and the United States helped Jefferson to become president. Another effect that the pirates had was military effect. This effect is important because as president, Jefferson formed the US Navy to deal with the Barbary Pirates. By forming the navy, Jefferson took a huge leap advancing America’s military strength. This would later affect the whole world in future wars such as WWI and WWII. Anyone interested in the military should look at the encounter between the Barbary Pirates and the U.S. to understand the origin of the US
