[ 3.1] Which barnacle species ranges into the warmest water?
The Chthamalus montagui species ranges into the warmest waters. [4.1] On average, how many high and low tides will a given spot on the coast experience in a day, and why? Along the coast there will be an average 2 high and 2 low tides per day. The reason behind this is many different forces but one of the most important is the moons gravitational pull because of how close it is to earth. The moons gravitational pull along with the oceans internal elastic forces causes a water ‘bulge’. If you are on the coastline facing the moon, high tide will occur. Through the changing of the tides the Semibalanus were settling at the top for some time but by day 28 many have taken over the bottom layer of the rock face. It is almost as the Semibalanus barnacles have conquered the bottom region as there are very few Chthamalus to been seen. Above the 2-meter mark on the rock face the Semibalanus are scattered and few can be seen. The Chthamalus are greatly observed on the higher region of the rock face. When it was day 7 there were many Chthamalus barnacles on the bottom of the rock face and by day 28 few can be observed.
General observations: It seems that through time that the Chthamalus barnacles have high survival on the higher region on the rock face compared to the lower end of rock surface. The lower rock surface is filled with many Semibalanus and very few Chthamalus.
9.1 Hypothesis: My hypothesis behind the pattern of distribution is that the Semibalanus are better survivors at the lower region of the rock surface because of their diamond like structure which allows it to be opened when underneath water and close shut when exposed to air. They would rather settle for the bottom region where they aren’t exposed to air as much. The Chthamalus have better chance of settling and surviving at the top region because there won’t be much competition with the Semibalanus barnacles because they can handle air exposure as well as thrive in warm waters which is seen at the top of the rock surface because
