Located on the grounds of Roanoke College’s campus is the reportedly haunted house known as Monterey. This house was built in 1853 by the Huff family, over time passed through many different owners, and in 2002 was officially bought by Roanoke College. Throughout the history of the house several of the occupants are known to have died within the premises of the property, thus contributing to it’s reputation of being haunted. In our investigation of the Monterey house we spent two nights in the house gathering various types of data to aid us in our attempt to discover what theory of haunting is consistent with the experiences within the house.
Many individuals ponder whether paranormal activity in fact does exist, or whether it is just a hallucination of the mind. Although, this may be a controversial topic, countless individuals can swear that they have witnessed a spirit with their own eyes, as others couldn’t disagree more. In the book, The Hauntings of Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown, the author uses personal encounters of witnesses to justify the presence of a spirit in a historical location. The tales the author includes pertains to people from all different classes and statuses such as, slaves, soldiers, lost-lovers, and even the prosperous individuals of Virginia. Meanwhile, the author also provides historical information, by stating the establishment of towns and informing the reader about the effects of wars, such as the Revolutionary and Civil War.
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone says, haunted houses? Scary? Ghosts? Studies show that people hear and see things that aren’t there when they are scared or frightened. Leading them to report “paranormal” activity. Haunted houses make people do that. But, in order to successfully understand the Amityville haunting, one must know the murderer of the family, the other family who purchased the home, and how the haunting of the house started.

I read the true story, The Amityville Horror. The book is a retelling of the 28 terrifying days a family spent at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, Long Island. George and Kathy Lutz, along with their three children, move into a house that seems to be almost too good to be true. The story “The Haunting of Hill House” written by Shirley Jackson and “Rose Red” by Steaven King have many similar things that happen. In both the movie and book it talks about a group of people that are psychic that visit a haunted house that has had so many things happen inside. They believe the house is alive and they go inside to see it for themselves. Both houses had a family Crains and the Rimbauers that have died in the house or on the way to the house.
The article “Whispers From The Grave” by Katia Bachko, it talks about ghost whisperers or people who talk to ghosts, it also talks about why people are so interested in ghost stories. One example to show that people are interested in ghost stories is they are spooky. The article states “Sarah Winchester starred in terror at Adam Coons, trying to comprehend the chilling words he had just uttered” (Bachko 4). Sarah was the wife to the man who owns the company of the Winchester rifle, this shows how the ghost story is spooky because, it makes the reader spooked of what could come next. If someone didn’t know what going to happen next they would wonder and question what would happen and generally people like stories when they have to guess what
It was summer time and I was finally home from college in Maine, My family’s house is in Upstate New York and I’m an only child so my parents didn’t need a huge house, Though the house was small it was very old Build and built famous Architect in Buffalo, New York.
