Barriers To The Immigrant Community

In my opinion, most research I have come across is based on how immigrants’ identities are being shaped by dominant Canadian culture. However, not a lot of research is being done on how they themselves have, and are able to incorporate their own culture into Canadian society. Therefore, I was very interested in finding research that focuses on how immigrant communities have done so. The focus of this paper is to provide information on the importance of immigrant involvement and participation in society, and how this in turn can help in their integration into Canadian communities. Note that the barriers that I will be discussing are subject to immigrants and refugees across countries, and are not limited to immigrant communities in Mississauga. Some barriers to the integration of Peel immigrant communities—based on my research findings—include: the lack of social services like housing (Frisken and Wallace, 2002, p. 34, p.55 & p.66), access to healthcare, employment (financing), and sense of belonging. …show more content…

Housing impacts the process of integration as it is the base for starting and establishing life in a new community. For example without housing, immigrants are prone to homelessness, which can then lead to health problems, then to emotional distress. Therefore lack of housing poses a threat to the integration process of newcomers. In the Peel Region, settlement workers and agencies themselves are stressing the lack of settlement services provided to the new arrivals. With cities like Mississauga—whose immigrant population is rapidly increasing, settlement services must be readily available. According to a Mississauga settlement worker, there has been major financial cut backs from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) (Mukhtar et. al., 2015, 398). As a result of this lack of government support, agencies are now being limited in their ability to provide for example, programs (settlement education), and other related services.
