Basketball has been a major reason in shaping me into who I am today. This sport has greatly affected my life in helping me develop skills and fundamentals that apply in the real world. The dynamics in the game directly relates to what takes place in life. Looking back on my journey, I would not trade it in for anything. From my time playing on the streets, to playing on the hardwood, there were many lessons that I still carry with me today.
Growing up as a kid I was really never the sporty type of guy. I was always outside on my bike shredding dirt hills. When I wasn’t riding my bike, I would be exploring near the creek and sometimes get wet due to the water splashing against the surface. If I wasn’t doing either, I'd be hanging out with

The talented kids were still getting the spotlight, and kids like me showed up because he had to.
I will never forget the day our team won the state championship, and I was the MVP. Our team was getting blown out by the rival team by 20 points at the half. To make matters worse, our star point guard went down with a season ending knee injury. Once the coach had used our final timeout, he had a talk with the team in hopes of rallying our squad back into the game. As my teammates and I were heading back on the court, coach stopped me and gave me words of advice.
“Listen son, this is your moment,” he said
“Yes sir.” I replied.
“Go out there and be great. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” he said as he gave me a nod to go out and play.
The whistle blew and all I could think about was hoisting the shiny championship trophy. So what do I do? I went out there and played my hardest. My blood was rushing all throughout my body. The tears falling out of my eye sockets. The sweat pouring down my neck like a waterfall. I had brought the game back into reach. It was a back and forth battle and I had managed to bring the back within 1. With no timeouts left, we had to run the length of the court. I received the inbound and managed to deliver the final dagger to win the game. All i could hear was the crowd chanting “MVP!” “MVP!” “MVP!” After this moment in time, I realized that if I wanted to be like
I walked into school to be greeted by a janitor vacuuming the floors. It was time to start thinking about the game and getting my focus level up. My pregame ritual wasn’t always the same beside for one thing, be the first to the locker room to have time to think to myself. Walking into the light blue and worn-down locker room it was almost like I could feel the emotion from all the players who had been there before myself. I was greeted by a wave of smell, the smell of victory, defeat, and pure hard work. It was quite musty but I was used to it and had grown accustomed to it. I sat myself down and began to think about how I would perform tonight and what I had to do in order to be victorious. I pictured myself going out onto the court and seeing all the fans packed into our old wooden bleachers. All I wanted to do was make them proud of the team they came to watch. I looked out the window to see the vehicles of my fellow teammates driving into our dirt parking lot. Soon, the locker room would no longer be quite and it would be filled with the shrieks, laughs, and giggles of my
Basketball has been more than just a game in my life, it has always been a big part of my life, but it has been a part differently than what it is to others. I love everything about basketball. I have done everything from keeping the official book for a men's and women's collegiate team to washing a high school team's practice clothes and even making sure everyone has their uniforms and shoes before leaving for an away game. You don't have to be on the court, you don't have to be the one taking the winning shot or calling the play to be part of the team. I want you to think about this instead of feeling sorry for yourself because you didn't make the cut. I hope by the time you finish reading this you will realize
Learning the game of basketball has changed my life for the better. As a little girl, my father believed that I would be an incredible athlete. As soon as I could shoot a basketball, my dad took me to a park to develop my skills. Practicing constantly led me to fall in love with the sport. Basketball became more than just a game, it became a passion. Pursuing this passion has been rewarding, inspiring, and empowering.
Basketball was my favorite sport growing up. I’ve played since I was little and I still play the game today. I played basketball at my elementary school, St. Cecilia, from Kindergarten till 8th Grade and also played AAU basketball for about 2 years before entering High School. Going into my freshmen year of High School, the first sport I played was basketball. Tryouts began in about the start of November and ended about 2 weeks after. I had made the Freshmen A team. I was excited and as the season progressed, we didn’t win many games but I still had fun playing. Nearing the end of the season, golf was another sport coming up that I also wanted to try and play. I say “try and play” because at the time, I was also going to play AAU basketball. I had set in my mind that I was going to play basketball for all of my four years of high school, but my parents pushed me to tryout for golf. When the basketball season ended, golf tryouts started. Tryouts lasted for about 2 weeks, and I made the JV team. When I found out I made the team, I was very surprised. I hadn’t put in the hard work as others before tryouts came around, but the coach saw potential in me and that I can become a great player. The coach saw so much potential in me, that every week, I kept progressing in skill and fine tuning my mechanics. Halfway through the season, about 4 or 5 weeks after I made the team, my coach gave me the chance to play with the Varsity Golf team for a couple days. I was excited and eager to
On a not so typical friday night, after a long day of school, my team and I knew that the day was not over. We had a fight in front of us and we knew what needed to be done. Coughlin high school was going into the ballgame as underdogs. Having everyone look at us as “the team that never wins playoffs” really makes you push harder for that title. It was very typical for my team to get the “short end of the stick” when it came to playoff rankings. The only thought that crossed my mind was to win so my team can move on to distracts. In the locker room before the game, everyone was getting ready and our coach told us something that i would never forget. He said “play this game for the next 48 minutes as if it was the last 48 minutes of your life.” After hearing this, we knew that we had work to do and that we had to accomplish the goals that we came in wanting so badly.
However, there is a limit of five fouls per player. Once the person reaches the
Basketball has always been something I loved ever since I was a little girl. I remember when I was younger, we had a basketball hoop in my driveway and my brothers and I would always go out and play one on one or horse. I also remember losing, a lot. Although it wasn’t about winning or losing for me, I just loved the game. In fourth grade, I started playing competitive basketball and loved the sport even more. Maybe it was scoring points or getting an assist, I’m not really sure the reason, I just knew I loved the game. As I got older my love for the game only grew; until high school hit.
“You got this. Don't give up no matter how tough the game gets. You're ready.”My coach said to me.
I heard the whistle blow from our field, which meant the last game had concluded. I knew it was time to play the biggest game of my life. All I wanted was for our team to win. I wanted to win.
I have grown up playing basketball my entire life. When I was only three days old, I was being passed around in the stands at a basketball tournament while my parents coached my older sister. I have lived and breathed basketball for as long as I can remember.
Although men and women’s basketball are closer to being equal than softball and baseball, the leagues are still separate. America has a women’s league and a men’s league and never the two shall meet. A woman is not allowed in the NBA since she has the WNBA. The separation is strong, obvious, and seemingly permanent. Like basketball, they created softball to play indoors during the winter. The game earned the name softball and due to its easier properties was often “regarded as baseball’s stepchild” (Ring, p. 60). They passed the game down to women, as it seemed safe enough to limit the risk of injury. And so the separation began.
Running into the gym with my team, knowing it was my last middle school basketball game, but first championship game I felt elated and truly blessed. My knees quivered with anticipation after seeing all the bleachers filled with people. After realizing even the press and other media was in attendance I grasped the moment like a newly elected president at his inauguration. I am warming up doing basketball drills, when I began to look at the flags on the gym wall depicting the history of the basketball team. The years and dates of the last championship game, Historically a championship game had not been won since 2007 . The more I stared at the flags, the more it made me want to win this game and make history in this gym. As the crowd and cheerleaders start to chant, cheer and get loud, I started to feel more comfortable and rowdy more than I had ever felt in any other game that I’ve played. Waiting for the referee to blow the whistle for jumpall to start. I felt my fingertips tapping the side of my leg, which for some reason gives me a sign to myself that I am pumped up and ready to play!
The sight and sound of watching the basketball swish through the net are second to none. For this reason and much more, I have fallen in love with the game of basketball and all the sport has to offer. From an extremely young age until now I have played the game and I hope to be either playing or involved with the game as long as I live. I have tried many other sports including soccer, football, and lacrosse but none can compare to the pleasure and passion that I have for basketball. This has become more than a sport for me, it has become a passion and something that I have dedicated my time, energy and hard work into.
The sport of basketball is known as a fun past time for any person young or old. Basketball is a great way of exercise and a great way to have fun with friends and possibly make some new ones. I love to watch and play the game, basketball is a very entertaining sport and can be played by anyone. Basketball has many negative and positive things about it based on my opinion. Basketball is known as a good pastime in many people’s eyes but can also be seen as a passion for many others. Basketball in my opinion the best thing I can do with my friends to have fun while burning a few calories. I see basketball as a fun and easy way to have fun rather than sitting on the couch all day playing video games or watching television. One reason I love
Within Hollywood’s movies depiction of drug addiction, many have failed to represent all true aspects that come along with such lifestyles. The movie, The Basketball Diaries, is based off a novel Jim Carroll wrote from his own diary entries. As a teenager growing up in the sixties, Carroll reveals his progression of drug abuse which eventually leads him addicted to heroin.Heroin is a white powder derived from morphine found in opium. It is commonly prescribed as a painkiller, but is also a popular street drug. The director casted Leonardo DiCaprio as Jimmy, and concentrates on creating the character as a stereotypical drug abuser. DiCaprio’s most captivating scene is when he is going through heroin
