Present day Bastrop County was formed from one of the oldest colonies in early Texas, and named for the man who influenced the Spanish governor to grant Moses Austin permission to start his colony in Texas. As the good, old story goes, in 1820 Moses Austin traveled to San Antonio seeking permission from the governor to lead Anglo settlers to Texas; however, permission was denied. At that point the Baron de Bastrop, who had developed influence with the government, interceded for Austin, who at last received permission in 1821, to lead three hundred Anglo settlers to Texas.
