The Battle of Gettysburg on June 1, 1863 the Battle of Gettysburg started. It was the deadliest battle on U.S soil, between the North (union) and the South (confederate). The Battle of Gettysburg was the major turning point of the civil war. Howard was only 32 years old, was an experience professional soldier who lost his right arm in the battle a year earlier.
