Jessica joined Beasley Allen Law Firm in 2015 as a lawyer in our Mass Torts Section. She is working on cases related to testosterone replacement therapy.
Notable Cases
Jessica’s focus, testosterone replacement therapy, is intended for men who have a medical condition called hypogonadism, in which the body does not produce enough testosterone due to injury or disease. However, direct-to-consumer marketing campaigns push products such as AndroGel, Testim, and Axiron, claiming a condition known as “Low T,” or low testosterone, could cause men to experience symptoms such as low libido, muscle loss and weight gain. But a drop in testosterone levels is a natural part of aging in men. Testosterone supplements are designed not for age-associated declines

We’ve all seen the commercials of men using male enhancement drugs to better their sex lives. In the commercials the couples always seem to be as happy as can be as if they were on cloud nine. During the commercials the voice of the announcer can always be heard advising users of the risk of taking these drugs. Also during the commercial its advised to seek help from a physician. Seeking the help of a physician is crucial because they’ll be able to tell you which supplement is better for you. But too often these warnings go unheard and sometimes that mistake can be deadly. People put themselves at risk by taking substances that can affect their health. Those who suffer with heart disease, diabetes, and blood pressure issues should definitely be careful and are most affected.
One of the most-treasured items a person can have is their health. Consequently, a great deal of money is spent on healthcare on account of people want to be healthy to do the things they enjoy in life. In the article “Steroid Abuse in Today’s Society,” states “There is increasing concern regarding possible serious health problems that are associated with the abuse of steroids, including both short-term and long-term side effects.” ("Steroid Abuse in Today's Society" 3). Unfortunately, there are side effects that will accompany someone who takes steroids. For women and men, steroids can cause masculinizing effects. These symptoms can cause fertility problems in both genders. Fortunately, by stopping the use of drugs can cause a shift in changing men’s health for the better, but for women the symptoms may never go away. Studies have not concluded the long-term effects of steroids, but in the worst cases, death can occur. Performance enhancement drugs are dangerous to an athlete’s
Anabolic-androgenic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs has always been a forbidden thing in sports, but have just recently come into the spotlight again. According to Machado and Cortez-Pinto, “Anabolic–androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone, the main male sex hormone” (280). Athletes mainly take anabolic-androgenic steroids to
Testosterone is a hormone that plays a vital role in men's health. Over time, or through various conditions, the testicular ability to produce testosterone levels declines, or fails, leaving men with lower than optimal testosterone levels. Testosterone gels for men, natural testosterone boosters, injections and patches are available to treat low levels.
Anabolic steroid is a steroid that includes hormones that derive from testosterone, the primary male hormone. As a Schedule III drug, it has a low to moderate chance of being abused. In 2001, approximately 2% of high school students had taken steroids in the past year. Steroid revenue is about 400 million dollars a year in the United States. With 100 varieties to choose from, no wonder high-profile athletes have used them to get a “one-up” on their competition. As more varieties are being invented, either by “blending” or “stacking,” people need to be aware of the detrimental effects of anabolic steroids.
Androstenedione is a hormone used to make medicine. The body makes Androstenedione naturally by the adrenal glands, ovaries, and testicles; but it comes in a pill and as a spray form as well. (“Androstendedione”). The effects of having too much Androstendedione result in its conversion in the body to estrogen and testosterone (“Androstenedione: Uses..”). It is used to increase the production of the hormone testosterone to enhance athletic performance, increase energy, keep red blood cells healthy, and enhance recovery and growth from exercise. This causes athletes to take Androstenedion through pills to staggeringly improve their athletic ability against their opponents. Androstenedione is known to increase the chance of prostate cancer, baldness, and liver disease. Since Androstenedione bumps up the levels of testosterone in the body, it can lead to enlarged breasts, even on males. The steroid can also lead to aggression and depression. (“Androstenedion”). But since Androstenedione is used for medical use, it is not illegal to use for the public; but sports have banned it from being used by
In women: growth of facial hair or excess body hair, changes in or stop in the menstrual cycle, deepened voice” (pg.3). This helps readers see that the effects are both evident in men and women; as well as, by reading some of these effects the reader can only imagine how painful and miserable it would be to live the rest of your life fighting those physical and mental changes. If you really want to live your life to the fullest then do not try Anabolic steroids, because you are heightening your chance of long-term illness and pain by taking this drug. This is why I am against the use of Anabolic-androgenic
It is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, ovaries and testes. It's a hormone that's usually transformed to testosterone and estradiol in both men and women. Androstendione is available legally only if prescribed, and is a controlled material. Manufacturers and bodybuilding magazines advertise its ability to permit athletes to train harder and recover more quickly. Though, its use as a performance-enhancing drug is illegal in the United States. Scientific studies that disprove these claims show that additional androstenedione don’t raise testosterone and that your muscles don't get stronger with use. Actually, nearly all of the androstendione is quickly transformed to estrogen, the main hormone in females. Side effects of androstendione in men contain, acne, diminished sperm production, shrinking of the testicles, and expansion of the breasts. In women, side effects contain acne, masculinization, for instance, deepening of the voice and male-pattern baldness. In both men and women, androstendione can decline HDL cholesterol, which puts you at bigger risk of heart attack and stroke. In conclusion, if you use androstenedione incorrectly you will have serious health
In USA .5% of Americans take steroids between the ages of 18-34. Many people that take steroids live a dangerously unhealthy life. Even though they think that they are living a healthy life because they eat spinach, run every day, and drink milk shakes, but there are consequences. For example, people who take steroids have severe problems like physical, mental, and emotional effects. Therefore, making a person gain muscle. Meanwhile causing the testosterone to malfunction, affecting the body, which promotes muscle building and androgenic, which is responsible for male traits; such as deeper voice and facial hair. It also disrupts the normal production of hormones in the body, causing both reversible and irreversible; changes that include sperm production and causing a person to change his sex origin. There is also another severe consequence for the use of steroids; cardiovascular system affecting heart attacks and
The video presented opened my eyes to the effects steroids has on the body and the effect society has on steroids. Before watching this video, I had assumed steroids were a “bad” synthetic drug. Though in reality, it’s a synthetic testosterone and if administered properly it can be used in a healthy manner. Physicians prescribe it for male patients who cannot produce testosterone, or to treat muscle loss, anemia, stunted growth and delayed puberty (CITE). However, most people using steroids do not have an issue producing testosterone, nor any other clinical reason. These people have recognized that steroids are able to enhance their physical performance –strength, speed and enlarged muscles. Unfortunately, those using this substance are putting
Anabolic androgenic steroids play an important role in the pharmaceutical industry and have many beneficial effects on sick patients. According to the Parssinen and Seppala the authors of the article “Steroid Use and Long-Term Health Risks in Former Athletes” they state that “Anabolic steroids and testosterone are effective and well tolerated pharmaceutical agents when administered for proper medical indications such as androgen replacement therapy, osteoporosis, aplastic anemia, and cancer.” (Parssinen, Seppala, pg. 1). The issue is that the abuse of steroids have increased within athletes and many doctors are concerned of the adverse effects that it will have.
These boosters increase the free testosterone that's in the body. While most people likely don't give
Bodybuilders and athletes may also administer Human Chorionic Gonadotropin throughout a steroid cycle, in an effort to avoid testicular atrophy and the resulting reduced ability to respond to LH stimulus. In effect, this practice is used to avoid the problem of testicular atrophy, instead of trying to correct it later on when the cycle is over. It is important to remember that the dosage needs to be carefully monitored with this type of use, as high levels of hCG may cause increased testicular aromatase expression (raising estrogen levels), and also desensitize the testes to LH. As such, the drug may actually induce primary hypogonadism when misused, greatly prolonging, not improving, the recovery
The case study provides an incisive look at problems facing Richard, Wood and Hulme LLP. The main problem addressed is the lack of cohesion in the team working for Spector Industries. This is a major problem for the company for two reasons. First of all, Spector is an important client. Secondly, team work has been a strategy for RWH since it began operation. Thus, a lack of cohesion among team members affects the tight deadlines that the company has and team morale is lowered due to the firing of two favourite senior employees. The report advises alternative actions based on decision criteria’s and alternative analysis matrix and provides key recommendations to avoid such problems in future. It does not make any changes to the current process and proposes the best alternative solutions which could resolve the current situation and avoid the same in future audits.
