The city of Mumbai has seen much growth in the past years. A string of elegant hotels have been set up for travelers and high-class business men. An ever growing, top of the line airport has been built for those coming in and out of the country. From the outside, Mumbai seems to have taken a liking to being internationally integrated with the rest of world, otherwise known as globalization. This is not the case, however; as seen in Katherine Boo’s novel Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity. This novel is set in a slum right next to the Mumbai International Airport called
Chapter three of Eyal Press’ Beautiful Souls follows Avner Wishnitzer, an Israeli combat soldier serving in the occupied territories during the Second Intifada. In the 6-Day War of 1967, Israel captured the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and has since kept the land under an Israeli military occupation. In 1987 to 1991, a Palestinian uprising involving resistance and civil disobedience, known as the First Intifada, occurred in the occupied territories. Consequently, Israel deployed many soldiers into the occupied territories, and an estimated 1,674 people were killed in total. The Second Intifada, a much more violent Palestinian uprising in the occupied territories, transpired from 2000 until 2005. In response, Israel enacted Operation Defensive Shield, a large-scale military operation, in 2002 to stop the terrorist attacks and suicide bombings of the Second Intifada. An approximate 4,426 people were killed in the Second Intifada. Avner Wishnitzer’s public refusal to serve in the occupied territories was worth getting kicked out of Sayeret Matkal and being disgraced by Israeli society because it made people question the occupation and the treatment towards Palestinians. Even if Avner had been my father, I would have condoned his choices because I could create my own reputation in the military. Additionally, the current controversy over the Israeli occupation legitimizes his stance and actions for many Israeli citizens.
These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich was performed by Grapevine High School Theatre, December First and Second at Grapevine High School. These Shining Lives is the story of Catherine Donahue. Catherine Donahue was employed at the Radium Dial Factory, a factory known for its generous pay with easy labor. Radium Dial produced glow in the dark watches hand-painted with a radium compound. Working at the factory all of the factory workers were using a technique known for painting china, where the painter would twist the brush in between their lips to get a fine point upon the brush. When the material was consumed, it permanently embedded itself within the bones of the workers, where it continued to emit radiation for the entirety of the victim's
To have a goal enables a person to do his/her best in whatever they set out to accomplish. Achieving academic excellence in high school has given me a love of learning. This desire for more knowledge propels me towards a college education that will prepare me to do my best in my future. Having the perseverance to become healthier has inspired me to work toward being a dietician. I have chosen this career goal because an increasing number of people in our country are struggling with obesity. In addition to these goals of a higher education and a career path, I would like to be a mother and raise my own family. Family is very important to me because I believe that family has a major influence on one’s personality. Without the influence of my family, I would not be who I am today.
Many Children in the world face challenges that most people don’t have to. For example, two of his people face very hard challenges, Abdul, and Kundila. In Katherine Boo’s story, Abdul has to work for his family to raise money to move to a better neighborhood. In Doris Pilkington’s story, Kundila has to protect his family from the white raiders.
To be beautiful is everyone's dream. Women want to be beautiful and Men want to be
Collateral beauty- a simple phrase that contains a plethora of complexity. After watching Allen Loeb’s film “Collateral Beauty” I was quickly reminded of a picture that I encountered several years ago at a memorial ceremony for the Holocaust. Both sources reveal how love, time, and death are all connected and reveal moments of beauty even in the most desperate situations. The director of the movie, David Frankel, uses frequent transitions between layers of reality that leave the audience confused about whether events are true or if they are simply figments of a disturbed mind. Similarly, the image’s audience is faced with two realities of the past and the present: Holocaust prisoners and present day Israeli soldiers. This confusion reflects
Determination is when a person is willing to give up everything to accomplish their goal, or they are so confident in doing something that they never give up. That is one of the reasons I think the theme “Never Give Up” is the best possible theme. In the “Marble Champ” and “The 13th Goldfish,” the plot mostly
Katherine Boo’s implicit purpose for writing Behind the Beautiful Forevers was to give the reader an inside look at a day in the life of an individual living within a slum of Mumbai. The residents of the Mumbai slum, Annawadi, live upon piles of waste where there is minimal opportunity to create a better life for themselves. For example, residents within the slums of Mumbai scavenge through “mounds of illegally dumped construction rubble” (73) in hopes of making a profit off recyclable materials so they can provide a source of income for their families. The vast majority of individuals living within the slums of Mumbai have no choice but to scavenge because at a young age, they are pulled from their education and told they don’t “have a
My sense is to become a successful young man that makes my family proud. I imagine myself in the next two years to become a physical therapist assistant. If I were to graduate college and manage to join this type of career. My family would be so proud of me and congratulate me of my success. I will accomplish this by finishing my college course in the next two years. I will not give up on myself and coutnine pursue my education. This action is not necessarily enforced by family but by me. I always keep this thought in my head with my everyday actions. Also whenever I complete a college course there is always this sense of pride that comes out of it. It is the greatest feeling on this world for me. This would be the deftion of what success
Behind the Beautiful Forever by Katherine Boo is about citizens trying to survive in Annawadi one of India’s largest slums of 2008. Their slum is built on land that belongs to Mumbai airport. All of the citizens living in this slum face many struggles in their day to day lives that they must overcome to survive. In this book the Muslim Husian family’s struggles are described, they are the minority in the slum surrounded by Hindus.
ullies have been a long time pest that people will eventually encounter in their life, comparable to an obstacle, they can cause worry, concern, agitation, etc. Though those feelings depend on the person and whether they see that “obstacle” as easy to overcome or difficult to prevail over. In Shane Koyczan’s poem “To this day… for the Bullied and the Beautiful”, he talks about how his past experiences with bullies have had many different influences and impacts on his life and one’s other. With deep insight, one can be able to see how bullies affect the development of one’s identity, their personality, and social interactions positively and negatively. For instance “We used to stay inside for recess because outside was worse.
I am determined because when I set a goal I complete it. Like if i want to do good in a class i would do it.Also I would set a goal in a lot of things.I would also st goals in

There are a large group of individuals who believe that outer beauty is temporary while inner beauty is untouchable and ever lasting, and that is what makes someone truly beautiful. Even photographers that photograph beautiful models say that they look for girls that portray a beautiful soul behind the face or a feeling of kindness that shows through. It is amazing how inner beauty can make an average looking person light up a room with there heart-stopping presence. It is a permanent quality which makes an individual interesting, reachable, and trustworthy. If you feel beautiful, your own confidence and self-worth brings out a glow of beauty that no outer beauty can compete with. If inner beauty is the genuine
