Because it is running
We all dream. We yearn for that day where we will turn our lives around. We think of how unbreakably we will love, how fierce we will be, and how our lives will never be the same dull grey mass floating around in all eternity without anyone ever really noticing us or remembering us. But no matter how much and how hard we dream, these dreams rarely come true because in our tedious existence we have something maybe even more important than the perfect body, social circle, opinions etc.: We have security.
The yearning for changes is the main focus of the short story Because It Is Running By by Jo Lloyd. There is a kind of omniscient 3rd person narrator which gives us an impression of the characters but on the same time

The title is also very noteworthy. The title has a certain passivity to it because it seems that whatever it is that is running by, is out of your control. So all that can be done is watching it without ever being able to stop or interfere with it. Usually sentences that start with the word ‘because’ are an answer to something so having a title start with that word makes it very intriguing because the reader gets curios and wishes to know the question. At the nature of this question we can only guess but since the theme of the short story seems to be how humans are desperate to change their lives but still unable to do so it could be that the thing that is running by might be life. Life is something that humans in general have no control of and one’s life was created without your consent and it will also be taking without it. All humans can do is trying to follow it and live life it to the fullest.
But it might also be happiness that is running by, just like Edie ran by and past Wil. It is also mentioned that she might be on the run from something like on page 2 line 72 and also at the very end on page 5 lines 176-177. Edie’s answer to whether she thinks she will be safe from the FBI in Marrakesh is also striking: “Turns out they’re everywhere, she said.” It is highly unlikely that she is actually running away from the FBI so ‘they’ must be someone else, like lovers that she runs
The book Who Moved My Cheese is about change and how it can affect how you are in life. Some people take changes hard while others just go with the flow. Some are ready for a change when the time comes and others want things to never change.
The theme of this book is that the human capacity to adapt to and find happiness in the most difficult circumstances. Each character in the novel shows this in their way. For instance, their family is randomly taken from their home and forced to
The Changeable nature of life affects us all somehow. Whether it be moving to a new city, having children, or losing people that we love, it can affect people in many different ways. For example, in the novel, the main character
What would life be like if people didn't undergo change? Many opportunities happen in life because of adjustments people make for themselves. In the short stories "Mirror Image" by Lena Coakley and "Saturday Climbing" by W.D. Valgardson the protagonists Alice and Barry both have struggles with the major changes happening in their life. Throughout their stories, they become less pessimistic, they adress their problems and they gain a newfound confidence and trust in others. Change can be extremely difficult, but its a necessary step towards a positive life.
For example, when my grandmother was young, she used to dream about being surrounded by a loving family. She was an orphan. She often tells me stories about how she would lie awake at night dreaming about just that. Many kids in her orphanage used to tell her that none of them were ever going to have a life like that “Why would we?” they said, “can you not see not even our parents wanted us!” Despite all the harsh words, she kept on dreaming and overcame all her obstacles and has reached her goal. Even though your goals might seem impossible, if you dream big you might get just that.
“Everyone always says that anything is possible, but some things in life just can’t be reached. Sometimes your dreams just can’t be achieved.” (Carl Johnson) All humans living in America have dreams. These could all easily be described as the American Dream. The American Dream can frequently change from time to time due to the time period. It can also change due to the age of the person at hand. Children grow up having these dreams, but who knows how long these dreams will last. Some elderly people develop new dreams or are still chasing to fulfill the dreams they’ve had since they were much younger. These dreams are all things that people want and desire to have. Some of these dreams are unrealistic and could never happen.
Change can be seen as a form of transformation or conversion. A form of change can be seen in “Victory Lap” by George Saunders, a short story written in such a way that the events that are enrolling throughout the story are being processed and told through the minds of three main characters. Having the perspective of each character allows us, the readers to get a much greater understanding about them and to make a better character analysis. Having said that, this story is simply about a girl, Alison getting kidnapped by an unnamed kidnapper. What were really captivating were the changes spotted on characters as the conflict progresses. One character in particular is very intriguing and his name is Kyle. One of our main character, Alison
Most believe that the American Dream is the perfect life, with a house and white picket fence. While this type of life may be an attainable plan, human nature causes us to always want more, so even with the “perfect” life, there is still always a goal left to be reached. Many famous celebrities who seem to have anything and everything right at their fingertips often end up committing suicide. proving that on the outside it may seem as though they achieved the American Dream, but there was still something more that they didn’t have. There is a common saying that goes “you only want what you can’t have.” So while people may dream their way into getting things that they desire, the grass remains greener on the other side.
“I never dreamed about success, I worked for it.” Estee Lauder. This quote really sums up the reason we shouldn’t dream because dreams make us believe in things that won’t ever happen unless a person actually goes out tries to accomplish what they want to do in life. In addition sometimes when people try to accomplish their dreams it leads to terrible outcomes such as the Great Leap Forward, The 5 Year Plans, and the Holocaust as some examples. Also, it results in many people overestimate what they can do which leads to terrible outcomes. This all shows often when people try to dream it often leads to outcomes that very undesirable.
There are many types of change, change in perspective, emotional change, physically change and world change. In Looking for Alibrandi, the author, Melina Marchetta demonstrates, the concept of change not only through the main character, Josephine, but also some other minor characters such as Michael Andretti and John Barton though the majority is shown through Josephine. The poem, “The Door” by Miroslav Holub is very similar to Looking for Alibrandi as it also shows the concept of change but it tells us that change can mean that anything could happen even if that anything is nothing. Change can be good, it can be bad, change can be anything and it can even start relationships.
Change is something you are probably familiar with. In “Beneath the Smooth Skin of America,” Scott R. Sanders talks about many changes in his life. The author starts the story looking throw the eyes of himself as a child. As a child he remembers that all that was in his sight was all he could see. The author’s best example of this is he says, ”Neighbors often appeared…where they came from I could not imagine” (27). As the author begins to see more by leaving the area he was around so often he starts to see more and more things. He started moving around to different places and started seeing the things that he had not see before. The author points out many things that he began to see like the stores
Showing ideas about Eliza’s problems how she begins with limited freedom then shows her strong will and changes into a Cinderella like character. When meeting the people who will be in their future who they soon meet while still living in the society standards of poverty.
“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything”.This quote is by George Bernard Shaw. In Humanities 9 we read a book called “Like Water For Chocolate”. “Like Water for Chocolate” is a book about a mexican romance with magical realism. The book was written by Laura Esquivel. A consistent theme in his book was change for the good and the bad. In my opinion the main thing that affects all of the characters is change.
This change is a positive and uplifting change of self for the protagonist in this novel.
Too much attention is centered around whether the Dream exists. The focus of people’s arguments should be what the Dream entails. Is it about money? Love? Family?
