Five weeks of training seems rather lengthy, just to check off the box so one can move up in rank. At least that’s what I heard from several people in the first few days of class. While some people had their doubts as to the reasoning for this mandatory class, I held on to my optimism, knowing that this class would help better myself so that I can become a more proficient leader for the future of our Coast Guard. The Chief Petty Officer Academy focuses on leadership styles and shows you a vast array of tools so that you can be better prepared to coach and mentor the newer generations that will someday lead this great service. A few things that I will take from this course is ability to be the Chief, learning someone’s personality, and stress mapping to know when someone may need help.
In order for someone to be a good, conquering, and effective leader, they first must understand what that means. In these times, many people have twisted and perverted the image of what a leader is and what they should be. This book helps by laying down the foundations of what a leader is and what it requires to be one. From the first chapter: Developing Your Potential, which talks about the importance of dying to self in order to grow. A leader must understand that God is their source of potential, that without Him, we can do nothing. A leader must understand the process; birth, death and then growth and must continue to die themselves if they desire to grow.
I would define success as being trusted and respected by those who are in my life. Having gained the trust and respect of a person to me shows that I have been successful in my job as a leader, friend, parent, and partner. Having the trust and respect of others is one of the key abilities of being a successful leader. Having a positive influence on people is one of the many jobs of being an effective leader.
Leadership, is a complicated and dynamic process. Not only does it require understanding your role as a leader, but also the job as a whole along with the jobs of those under you. The most important aspect of being an effective leader is understanding yourself and the people you lead. Putting the needs of your followers first is the foundation of a good leader, if you can make your followers feel safe and cared for, they will be loyal and excited to work for someone that they know has their best interests at heart.
