Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.

From writing thoughtful poems to research papers, I have experienced composing a diverse portfolio of literary analysis and criticisms throughout the school year. Ultimately, each composition allowed me to widen my horizons as a writer and see how I could improve as a writer.
When you begin to write it is best to start with a process. Planning, drafting, and developing are very important steps when writing. Doing so will make it easier to get into the minds of the people who will be reading the paper. This helps with deciding how the paper should be written. The next step would be to write a rough draft. This will be the basis of the paper. I find that writing a rough draft helps me get the main points across before I begin to lose my train of thought. I also find that it's a lot easier to write a rough draft if I have a list of ideas already written down that I will want to discuss. After finishing the rough draft, revising is the last step. This is when you rewrite or revise paragraphs, sentences, main points, and even your thesis. Ever since I was young, English has always been one my least favorite subjects throughout school because I did not enjoying writing. Writing always frustrated me because it seemed so time consuming. But as I grew older I came to the realization that writing papers are not as hard as we set it out to be. If you formulate a method to how you will complete the paper, and follow through with it, it makes the entire process so much easier. For example, for all the students who procrastinate with their assignments until the day before it is due. Think about all the time and effort you have to put fourth to complete an entire paper in one day. Imagine how much less effort it would take to simply start working on the assignment at least four days before the required due date. You would only have to spend an hour or two a day to complete the entire essay. This allows me to get my ideas on the paper, which is normally one of my greatest issues. Once I have the ideas, I can begin to focus and organize my paper. Section 8.2 of Writing for Success (2013) covers how to construct an outline for a paper (The Saylor Foundation). This was particularly important for me while writing my research paper. Listing my main points in order of importance allowed me to focus on one at a time before proceeding to the next.
