The first chapter of Becoming a Learner had scared me honestly. We are going to school to further our education and some job titles don't even want what you had specialized in college. It scared me because I came to college to find a good job when I am done with and if doesn't all work out in the end you will be with no job and in college debt. You need skills to make someone want to hire which scares me because I sometimes lack of skills. “ The primary purpose of college isn't learning a specific set of professional skills; the primary purpose of college is to become a learner” most college students don't know where they are going yet or know what to study so they should take advantage of learning outside of the box the more you learn during
Noted authors, Brandon Chambers, is quoted saying, “If you are going to fear anything fear success. Think about what you are doing and when you succeed what life you will have.” There are several different reasons why I could stay home, work and not go to college; I could go to work every day and make more money for the house, it’s easier, and I would be less stressed. Now, on the other hand there are many reasons why I should go to school; such as further my education, make my family proud, and make myself proud. I am attending college for several different reasons. One reason is to further my education. I hate feeling like I don’t know something, I like being the person everyone comes to for information. Also, because I want to
“The Novice as Expert: Writing the Freshman Year” reflected my writing experience while I transitioned from elementary writer to a critical writer. Sommers and Saltz write, “freshmen need to see themselves as novice in a world that demands ‘something more and deeper’ from their writing than high school” (Sommers and Saltz 134). This line highlights the hardship that most students face when trying to write successfully. My earlier written works were much weaker than my current pieces because I often wrote for the sake of passing the class. While developing my writing, I focused on the new ideas that were introduced rather than limiting my argument to familiar techniques and ideas. Because of my new attitude towards writing, I began to demand
The first reason why each young person should attend college is to gain knowledge and experience. To be able to have a professional career, we have to prepare ourselves with a lot of knowledge, then apply whatever we have learned to our job. Therefore, college will help us to improve the ability and skill to get better day by day. Furthermore, knowledge gives the owner respect from other people, who will treat him/her in a positive way. In " A college degree is a worthy achievement" by Maria Dimera, she argues that " Many think that a college degree has less value today than it did a few decades ago, but a college is more than just a piece of paper. It is an experience and an accomplishment no one can take away, no matter what comes after college." This is so true; When students decide to attend university, the first thing they should understand
Is there ever an instance when a M.Ed. cohort student does not have to take EDUC 635? I have had 2 students, 1 reading and 1 C&I, call to ask if they need to take 635. The C&I student said his professor talked about 630 being different for those taking 635 and those not. The reading student said 635 did not show on her advising sheet, which it does on all the advising sheets I have. The first time I was asked the question, I assumed there was some confusion with the professor, but when I got the same question twice in 2 days it made me wonder if I had missed something.
In this era of global economic stress, Lieberman encourages students to go follow their passions and go to college. even though they may not get the job they desire in the start of their career not to give up. In Lieberman’s article Stop Scaring Students, one of her main ideas is that college helps students develop basic life skills. Lieberman proves that she truly believes in healthy dose of learning because she states that “All students need a healthy dose of learning opportunities that build the skills and capacities that will support them as their professional and personal lives unfold.”(Stop Scaring Students) Lieberman believes that all students young and old should get a strong education so students can build their skills in college for
Ever since I started to seriously think about my future, I had aspirations of getting a degree and becoming a professional. Specific careers have changed constantly, ranging from becoming a teacher to an engineer. As I got older, I began to assess my strengths and weaknesses as well as my likes and dislikes. I know a college education is essential in today’s economy and society. Doors are opened to those with college degrees and a better lifestyle is guaranteed. A college education is not only economically beneficial but intellectually as well, for it provides a unique learning experience as it caters to an individual’s interests
"Students... need to recognize that their college education is above all a matter of opening themselves up to new dimensions of knowledge and understanding"- (Gary Gutting 'What Is College for?') Choosing to attend college is not for the faint of heart. Whether you're a traditional or non-traditional student the most daunting thought one has,
Today, many students are settling for jobs immediately out of high school instead of furthering their education in college. Students should consider how necessary college actually is for their lives in the future. It provides one with a significant amount of opportunities, a greater knowledge about their career plan, and a better sense of responsibility.
As a first generation student there has been an abundant amount of obstacles that have been placed into my path as a test to view how dedicated I truly am to my goals. Ever since I was a kid I aspired to be someone successful in my family and still do to this day. It was always my dream to be the first one to accomplish what the rest weren’t able to. To me being in school was already hard enough for me ever since I was a kid, because I could never get along with the rest of my classmates. Most of them would consider me as weird, just because I was a shy individual with a dora haircut. I never really spoke either because I felt so isolated from the rest, it was just so obvious for me I was different.
Throughout the history of time, man has learned. Man has always had to sacrifice something in order to learn. The process of learning more about a specific subject is to become literate. When one becomes literate, it could either have a positive or negative effect. Growing up I had many sponsors that had a direct effect on the position that I am in today. My senior year English teacher had a massive effect on my college decision-making process. My father also had a big effect on where I am today; he gave me a better understanding on life in general. Lastly the most important sponsor of them all is myself. Man has always been curious to learn more; the prospect of learning something new is something than man has always yearned for.
I have been at my site for about 14 to 15 weeks and have been feeling more comfortable in my experience. Although at the same time as I need to do some more studying of interventions and learning more about skills for my client’s well-being. After presenting my second case presentation I decided to reread some of the chapters from our process and procedures course again, since it has been a while since I looked at these intervention skills (as I took this course about 1.5 years ago). It was a while ago and I think now I need to brush up on using these approaches now. I think this presentation was useful because it showed me that I need to continue working on my skills as a practicum student. I received a lot of good feedback and I am taking a step in the right direction to think about the skills I need to be a good counselor.
My philosophy of learning has changed significantly since I came to the college. And it is kinda embarrassed to share with you the fact that I was not really know how to properly use internet to do the data researches before. Further, I had a pretty poor time management skill, and not really good at act socialize, and I didn't know how to communicate, negotiate, collaborate with team, and how to present myself in front of people which are all typical necessary skills that all college student should possess , but I didn't have these skills in three years ago. It has a lot to do with my personality, I took the personality assessment test in my senior year at my high school, the result of test identifies myself as a person that possesses rarely
As Allen Iverson once infamously said, “We talkin’ ‘bout practice.” Not, however, with the insignificant connotation attributed to practice in Iverson’s notorious press conference. Some people dream of how perfect their lives would be if only they were blessed with the scarce and extraordinary skills possessed by the world’s most renowned athletes. In reality, the world is filled with exceptionally talented men and women who never sniff the likes of the Olympics or a professional league. It is only a select few people who choose to harvest their dreams in the fields of hard work and dedication. It is only a select few people who choose to forge their gifts in the fires of determination and sacrifice. (Parallelism).
Five things I have learned or relearned from chapter one are as follows: Scheduling tools, effective studying activities, classroom behavior, grading in college and academic integrity.
Hundreds of thousands of students apply to colleges every year in hopes of earning a more successful future, yet many of those who graduate find themselves lacking basic skills on everyday issues. Buying a home, filing taxes, and finding careers are all fairly new and unfamiliar subjects for recent graduates to be taking on independently. While in school, students are expected to heavily focus on earning their degree, but they should also give attention to how they plan to support themselves and gain a strong foundation to build their futures upon. As author James Kramon puts it, “What’s the point of attending college if you’re just going to struggle when you graduate?” (Kramon 2) College curriculum does not offer guidance or education to students on how to prepare themselves for life after graduation. In this paper, I will argue if college students should be required to complete an informational course that touches upon topics such as buying a home, filing taxes, and finding careers.
