Everyone is going green; it is so common in today’s society for every company to advance to smarter ways of doing business. My long term future career goal is to become a Neonatal Physician. I would like to play a huge role in improving both the health care and natural ecosystem. We have to live here on Earth, so why not protect it “One Earth, one experience” -Edward Wilson. Hospitals operate on a 24-hour basis, 365 days a year. In the process of treating patients, they use a lot of water and energy and generate a lot of waste from medical products. Though most hospitals have made the initiatives to reduce some of these issues, I do believe that more can be done. Starting a sustainability program to reduce some of these concerns will not only
My long term career goal is to be a neonatal nurse and work in the newborn intensive care unit in the next 5 - 10 years.
I would like to go into the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner career field. Pediatric Nurse Practitioners help Pediatricians and other Physicians diagnose and take care of children from infancy to young adults. I have grown up with ten siblings and many more cousins, so I have learned how to deal with children of all ages. Also, I have been interested in the medical field since I was a little girl and I have always loved to help people. I would have liked to be a Pediatrician but I would prefere not be in school for another thirteen years, so I found that the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner was the perfect career for me.
1. Explain how the environment is prepared, maintained and cleaned to ensure it is ready for the healthcare activity
Hospital waste is one of the world’s growing problems. Hospitals on average produce 29 pounds of waste per staffed bed in just one day (2016). One of the reasons for medical waste is that a large amount disposable products used for sanitary reasons such as drapes, basins, and sponges (Conrardy J et al, 2009). However, new methods using reusable products in operating rooms have provided a means to decrease the regulated medical waste generated by an average of 65% (Conrardy J et al, 2009). Even if the hospital bureaucracy is unconcerned with the environment. These changes reduce the cost of waste disposal (Conrardy J et al, 2009). On the social side of progress, nonprofits like Practice Greenhealth provide sources for environmental solutions for the health care sector. At the hospital’s request, they can send information packets to help inform hospital staff on more environmental purchases such as the “Less Waste member-only toolkit”
Health is increasingly becoming a key consideration for sustainability as it becomes more integrated into the concept. A sustainable lifestyle can enhance your physical and mental well-being through a range of different activities. The NHS supports this link between sustainability and health, which is why they hold an annual NHS Sustainability Day of Action, to engage staff, patients and the public on sustainable living. This day of action was supported in our region by The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
This semester I began my minor Pediatric Clinical research. One of the guest lecturers who came in was Dr. Edward Clark, Chair of Department of Pediatrics and Medical Director at Primary Children’s Hospital. I learned an incredible amount from his lecture on the importance and complexities of caring for patients. Dr. Clark shared a French proverb that resonated with me: "guérir quelquefois, soulager souvent, consoler toujours" or in English, to "cure occasionally, relieve often, console always". Most importantly, helping as a nurse is putting others before yourself. These are four principles that I believe are crucial to helping as a nurse.
What is a day like in the life of a neonatologist? What is a neonatologist? Neonatology is a specialty of pediatrics. Pediatrics is a branch of medicine dealing only with children. Neonatology is a branch of pediatrics dealing only with babies. The neonatal intensive care unit, of a hospital, is only used for babies with illnesses beyond the common cold. For example a baby with underdeveloped lungs would need to be placed in the neonatal intensive care unit. According to Tania Heller in On Becoming a Doctor “A neonatologist is a physician who specializes in the care and treatment of newborns, particularly those who are premature or ill” (Heller 128). Neonatologist job is usually only required in babies one to two months of age (OKcollegeStart).
“I began the study of medicine, impelled by a desire for knowledge of facts and of man. The resolution to do disciplined work tied me to both laboratory and clinic for a long time to come” (Jaspers , n.d.). In the past week or so, I changed the career that I wanted to pursue from being a Pediatric Anesthesiologist to being a Medical Technologist. When I first decided to become a Pediatric Anesthesiologist, I was in my junior year of high school and I was simply browsing the world wide web for a good paying job that was also helping others that are in need. Two years later and taking the college course Strategies for Success in College, I have realized that money alone cannot sustain an individual in reaching their ‘dream goal’. I needed something
Through the Weissman Scholar program I will finally be able to decide what college I would like to attend and pursue my dream of becoming a Neonatal Nurse. If I were to receive this scholarship it would boost my confidence knowing that I took on the responsibility of starting college with a strong foundation that will help me get on step closer to reaching my career goal. This program will push me forward and give me the ability to obtain a degree in Nursing and help me one day achieve my dream of becoming a Neonatal Nurse. Since very few of my family members went to college I find it very important to receive an education so you can have a brighter future. My parents have always struggled throughout my whole life to find the money to support
The sounds of a little cries, from new life being born, fills the tiny room. The doctor hands me the little newborn “Ready for your check up?’ i whisper to the infant or The feel of comfy chair against my skin, listening to a young girl talk about her family’s rough times. I wait patiently to give my input. The purpose of the project is to discover the possible choices after high school and learn about my options. I chose two careers for my research project : Mental health counselor and Neonatal nurse. These two careers interest me because i love taking care and helping people. I'm very compassionate and empathic. I feel these traits would really benefit for these two jobs. I hope to gain knowledge about what requirements to be in these careers
Just a few years ago, I fully realized that I want to be a Neonatal doctor. When I was about three, I had this little doll that I would carry around. One day we were watching Life and Trauma in the E.R. and I threw my baby doll onto the floor and started to resuscitate her. Ever since then I knew that I wanted to be a doctor of some kind; I just wasn't sure what kind of doctor I wanted to be.
To become a neonatal nurse, you first need to complete a Bachelor's of Science in nursing program. Aside from enrolling in general education classes, students must also complete math and science requirements. In addition to nursing techniques and concepts, BSN programs also cover specific areas of nursing. To become license registered nurses, graduates of a BSN program must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for RNs, administered by the National Council for State Boards of Nursing. This tests individuals in broad subject areas, including health maintenance, infection control and pharmacological therapies. Registered Nurses with a bachelor’s of science in nursing will go on to a master's program to become a neonatal nurse. Nurses
In terms of educational goals, I'm shooting high and am hoping to get into a good Ivy League school (such as Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, or Columbia) or at least one of the highly acclaimed medical schools (such as Stanford, John Hopkins University, or the University of California in San Diego). When I finally begin college, I'm planning on going into the Nurse Practitioner or Pediatrician field of medicine. As of my high school years, I'm keeping my grades up and doing well in school; I've been trying to step out of my comfort zone and do more things that will get me out into the "real world" such as volunteering more often and applying for various programs to prepare myself for the future such as this Perry Outreach Program. I'm
The definition of a Labor and Delivery Nurse is, “in the labor and delivery rooms, and birthing centers, L&D Nurses are on the front line of pending motherhood. They help calm fears and put family members at ease while preparing the mother for a birth. They assist in the delivery and care for the baby immediately after the birth, and eventually take the baby to the nursery. In cases of premature babies or babies with health problems, the L&D Nurse will consult with the doctor and others to determine what happens next in terms of medication, isolation, or possible surgical procedures” (Who are these, 2003, p. 3).
Infants within the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are one of the most vulnerable patient population in the hospital. The quality and safety of these patients are at top priority because of their immune systems have not fully developed yet causing them to be at the highest risk for infections. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM, 2001), quality is defined as “the degree to which health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge” (Masters, 2005). The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) defines safety as, “the minimization of risk of harm to patients and
