Pediatrician A pediatrician is a doctor who works with children from ages ranging from infancy to young adulthood to assess their medical needs. These doctors help children in ways from having frequent health checkups to ensure their development is on track to diagnosing illnesses and tending to their injuries. Helping people and caring for them makes me feel useful and compassionate, which is why I being a pediatrician intrigued me so much. It makes me feel satisfied when I am making someone healthy and feel like himself or herself again. Before the 1800’s, children were cared for by their mothers in their own home, only the adults went to see doctors. Being this type of doctor, you must accept the fact that there will always be a possibility every day of you getting sick from something or someone else. I would like to think that without pediatricians, adults today would not be as healthy as they are because pediatricians play a big part in the prevention of problems that can potentially affect a child for the remainder of their time on this earth. Some of those problems can be depression, anxiety, mental disorders, behavior issues, (etc.). Another thing pediatricians do is prescribe any type of medication for the patient to ensure they recover. They even refer patients to specialists if the illness or injury is beyond their profession.

History
When medical licenses became a requirement, those who wanted to be doctors began to specialize and choose the type of medical field that they wished to pursue. Pediatrics did not come to America until after the 1700’s. It was initially brought over here by a German Pediatrician named Abraham Jacobi in the year of 1861. Living to be 89 years old, he is said to be the “Father of American pediatrics” (Grayson, Lee). He made his way to New York City in 1853 and he began work at New York Medical College, building his own training program. Many medical journals have been delighted to have him write about pediatrics for them. He was involved in the making of children wards in various New York City
