In the short essay, “Becoming a Writer,” penned by Russell Baker, he spoke of a memory from his past that later changed his perception of writing. After reading his piece, I reviewed the response questions listed below the essay to further my understanding of the piece. Almost like looking through a list of prompts as Russell did.
Growing as a Writer From writing thoughtful poems to research papers, I have experienced composing a diverse portfolio of literary analysis and criticisms throughout the school year. I started out the year writing minimally. By the end of the year, I noticed I was able to express my ideas and thoughts in a more clear and concise way on paper. Ultimately, each composition allowed me to widen my horizons as a writer and see how I could improve as a writer.
A semester has passed since I started college and my journey of becoming a better writer. It has been a very important semester for my future college career, and I would not be here without the things I have accomplished. The composition program has really helped me to prepare for what college writing is all about. Now standing here and looking back I could not imagine how it would be without that class. I believe my English, and my writing is better than it has ever been, and all thanks to the composition program.

Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.
In this world it is essential to know how to write well if you want to go far. You’ll have to write a lot to get yourself through education, and also to find a job. So one of my goals is to become a better writer. I will reach this goal by overcoming overthinking and lack of confidence in my writing.
There are many who strive to become famous writers and although some succeed, many do not find such great prosperity. In the words of bestselling author Stephen King, “while it is impossible to make a competent writer out of a bad writer, and while it is equally impossible to make a great writer out of a good one, it is possible, with lots of hard work, dedication, and timely help, to make a good writer out of a merely competent one,” (142). King’s thesis from his novel On Writing can be debated because with “hard work, dedication, and timely help” it is possible for a writer of any skill level to improve to become better. On Writing is intended to teach the basic skills of writing so readers can develop writing skills to progress to be better writers. If one has passion for writing, patience, and the willingness to learn they will succeed in becoming great writers.

Many people have trouble with reading and writing till this day. There is no age restriction when it comes to the weakness of putting thoughts on paper or reading an entire book and not understanding it. Everyone has weaknesses but there are many ways to overcome them, such as a reader and writer. I am a prime example of having this weakness.
Writing is spontaneous. Writing can be ideas jotted down on to a paper without a rhyme or reason, or possibly with more reason than the paper itself. Writing is a beautiful art that one will overlook time and time again, because it requires a likewise thought process of something greater than reality. Not just anybody could revolve oneself around writing, although occupationally, being a writer would require education, patience and creativity.
In my writing career, I have taken English classes throughout high school and a composition one class at my local community college. These classes have helped get me where I am today and has shaped me to become the writer I am now. There is plenty of room for improvement and I am hopeful this class will improve my knowledge. Although I have never excelled in writing, I try my hardest to do well at it.
Anyone can become an incredible writer if they become truly dedicated. It will take time, patience, and practice, but if you give it all of your effort, you can get there. The same applies to dancing. Anyone can become a great dancer if they dedicate themselves and give it the time, patience, and practice that is required. You don’t need to be a genius to write, nor do you need to be a genius to dance. As long as you dedicate yourself to become a great dancer, or writer, you can get there. Both dancing and writing require a tremendous amount of effort, but both produce a satisfying final product.
Becoming A Better Writer I believe it is important for any student who wants to succeed in class to take a step back and self-evaluate themselves in their work. To be the best, a learner should be able to determine how he or she is progressing and in what steps that person can take to improve his or her writing skills. Every writer encounters setbacks in their work, when this happens the student should know which resources are available for their assistance. I have used these methods and have discovered that I have matured quite a bit in my writing, in just a matter of a few weeks.
Being an effective writer requires being able to identify your strengths and weaknesses and what is effective versus what is ineffective with your writing. The first principle to be improved is being more specific. Sometimes as a writer responding to an email or assignment by writing too fast can cause the person to miss your initial point in the response and then there will be another email asking for clarity. This will allow them to comprehend the initial response and take action if needed or send a thank you in return (Cardon, P., 2013).
