What is athletic training? Athletic training is the concern of the well being of the athlete and generally assumes the responsibility for overseeing the total health care for the athlete. This basically states that an athletic trainer's job is to be there for the athlete whether he/she is injured or not, and to practice the prevention of injury. By learning the proper techniques and steps to stretching, an athletic trainer can pass that information onto the athlete to help prevent common problems such as cramping. Many people are more active today than they were many years ago. Injury prevention and diagnosis plays a big role in today’s society. Preventing an injury is important for many athletes all over the world, and for people that are physically active. Preventing injuries can benefit an athlete in the long run. Athletic trainers help athletes and physically active people stay healthy for what they do on a daily basis.

I had a hard time finding a career. All the careers I came across did not interest me at all. Until a friend came up with the idea of the career of athletic training. That is when I started my research and my interest grew greater.

The profession that I am interested in is an Athletic Trainer. I have chosen this career because it is something that I have recently become passionate about within the last two years. I have never been the kind of person to struggle with weight, however after having my 3rd and last child, weight has become an issue. I mention my personal struggle to give insight on why I have chosen an Athletic Trainer. This profession’s main goal is physical fitness. As a trainer you become responsible for another person’s physical active lifestyle. Assisting clients from injury to recovery, evaluating their bodies and advising the individual what is best. Athletic Trainers has many responsibilities. AT’s are professionals in the health care world who mainly caters to athletes. An AT however isn’t limited to just athletes. They work with just about anyone. Ages ranging from a child to an adult. Different skill and jobs, people such as soldiers, high school athletes, and professional athletes.

Athletic trainers are nearly everywhere. Most high schools, colleges, semi pro teams, Olympic teams, professional teams and basically any other organized athletic association has them. But unbelievably this is the type of exchange that happens a lot when engaging in conversation. Although Athletic Trainers are on TV all the time, we are usually referred to as "trainers" by the talent at ESPN or local news organizations.

Athletic Trainers are certified healthcare professionals who work mainly in the specialty of sport medicine. These professionals collaborate with physicians to treat athletes with preventative care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic exercises and emergency care. They are expected to recognize injuries and provide first aide. Athletic trainers also develop and carry exercise action plans for athletes who are injured and for injury prevention. These action plans may include therapeutic programs and performance testing.

To me an Athletic Trainer is someone that graduates from college certified to provide help to people that are injured, right out of college. This major can be obtained in four years without and further education, however; must take classes to keep up with the ever growing medical field. The main thing I think of when I think about going into Athletic Training is working at a school with the schools sports teams, however; they also can work in physical therapy clinics, hospital settings, nursing homes, etc. Athletic Trainers focus on prevention, treatment, what is wrong, and getting the patient back to health as well as working along side a doctor or physical therapist for further assistants.

Choosing a vocation can be a daunting task. With the world ever-evolving, one may come across a new attractive career every year. In order to ensure optimal job satisfaction, it is vital to educate oneself about every alluring prospect prior to committing. Simple factors like the time commitment and salary can mean the difference between a content existence and a miserable one.

The athletic training profession as we know it today first came into existence during the late nineteenth century with the establishment of intercollegiate and interscholastic athletics in the United States. (Prentice, 2014) Prior to this, early civilization athletics were unorganized. Although they were unorganized, there is information that suggests that Greek and Roman civilizations featured people who assisted athletes in reaching their peak physical condition. The evolution of intercollegiate athletics after World War I led to a new demand to prevent and manage athletic injuries. (Prentice 2014)

Being an athletic trainer can be a very exciting career path to choose. One who choses this very interesting career much enjoy a fast past world of sports and emergency medicine. I decided to shadow the athletic trainer at my alma mater; Hebron Christian Academy. His name is Zach Buchner. There are two different titles one can have , that is going to be ATC , meaning this person has their bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and are certified or a MATC , meaning this person has their master’s degree , bachelor’s degree and are certified in Sports Medicine . Most programs at universities are changing to a Master’s program, since more and more students are choosing sports medicine. It is extremely important that one perusing an athletic training/ sports medicine degree, that they understand how hard the admissions process can be .Universities can only take so many students who they believe are qualified. Athletic trainers are required to pass the BOC (board of certification) exam, in order to receive the title of ATC (athletic trainer certified) and be eligible to practice. An athletic trainer is a certified and licensed health care professional who practices in the field of sports medicine. Employment of athletic trainers is anticipated to grow 21 percent from 2014 till 2024. As people become more aware of sports-related injuries at a young age, demand for athletic trainers is expected to increase. Using physical therapy equipment, techniques or medication and asses and report the progress of recovering athletes to coaches or physicians. Being an athletic trainer is a great career choice if one enjoys the feeling of helping people, being close to sports and activities and a good salary and benefits.

In order to become an Athletic Trainer, a person would need a certain level of education. An Athletic Trainer needs to be educated in psychology, medicine and dentistry, therapy and counseling, and education and training. To be an Athletic Trainer, a person needs to be educated in psychology so they can understand people, their actions, mental processes, and how to treat problems. Trainers also have to know about medicine and dentistry because when a player gets an injury or illness they need to know the right treatment. Therapy and Counseling is also an important thing for Athletic Trainers to be educated in because they need to know mental and physical problems and how they are going to treat them. The requirements for an Athletic Trainer is a bachelor's degree, but you may also get a graduate degree. While in the bachelor’s program you will encounter classroom and hands on learning. The studies include science, and health related studies such as nutrition, kinesiology, biomechanics, and exercise physiology. After college or during college you must gain experience before you can be an Athletic Trainer. The experience requirements are supervised time in clinics and internships that may be with a college or local professional sports team. After earning your degree in Athletic training in most states you are required to have a license or registered and that is according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
