For the majority of nurses working within the field of modern medicine, one of the most difficult tasks associated with the job must be maintaining the tenuous balance between the pull of professional ambition and honoring the responsibility owed to their current role. Nursing remains one of the most stratified occupations in terms of recognized qualification, and a wide disparity exists between the positions of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Registered Nurse (RN) in terms of both experience and education. While standards vary from state to state, individual LPNs may be required to complete many of the same duties as their RN counterparts, including the administration of intravenous fluids, the withdrawal of blood for testing, and other crucial aspects of inpatient care. Despite the similar set of skills possessed by LPNs and RNs, the latter position commands a greater level of prestige and a significantly higher salary within the nursing field, and because of this many qualified LPN's aspire to attain the rank of RN in order to better their personal and professional lives. As a Wilmington resident of seventeen years, my choice to attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington is ‘without a shadow of a doubt’ an easy one. Becoming a Registered Nurse requires many hoops to jump through. The Associates Degree Nursing Program requires two years of your time, patience, and responsibility. This can be obtained either through a community college or either at a four-year college as well. I chose to attend a community college do to the fact that I have to work as well attending school full time. Time management is a key factor to becoming a great respectable Registered Nurse. As a Registered Nurse you will be trained in Anatomy, Physiology, Biology, and also Nutrition. The typical nursing program prepare you with the basic nursing skill such as taking vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, oxygen levels), to Emergency care, Pediatric care, Obstetric care, and also Medical- Surgical care. All of the information obtained through schooling helps prepare you for the NCLEX, to receive your nursing licenses. I have had my heart set on this particular major for years now. I chose Nursing because I love to help others. I want to be the hands and feet of those who are in need. I have a passion to serve others and a love for those who are sick and may need surgery to also caring for those who had a baby and celebrating with them in that moment in time. This paper explores the process of how nurses are socialized into their profession and how my own personal socialization process has shaped my nursing career.
