Becoming the Leader in Me John Dryden once said “We first make our habits, then our habits make us.” Habits are very powerful factors which affect every part of our lives, shape our character, and determine our behavior. Many schools have adopted a “Leader in Me” mindset in which schools use ideas mentioned in Stephen Covey’s book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” to develop good, effective character in their students. Leader in Me is a program created from a rendition of Covey’s book and revolves around his son’s, Sean Covey’s, book “The Seven Habits of Happy Kids.” The theory behind this program is if schools teach children to live lives by these “7 Habits,” then those students can develop strong problem-solving and communication skills while leading balanced, successful, and productive lives. Whether a college teacher, kindergarten teacher, or somewhere in between, teaching these habits to students will cultivate effective character in students. Covey breaks these seven habits down into three parts, private victory, public victory, and renewal. Being proactive is the first habit discussed of these seven habits. A clear distinction is made between a person who is reactive and a person who is proactive. A reactive person does not take responsibility for their actions, rather they preoccupy themselves with situations they have limited control over (Pettit, 2006).
