To begin with,a health practisioner may fascilate behaviour change in an individual with a health
risk behaviour through the application of different behaviour change theories and strategies.
In general, health risk behaviours are actions which may threaten an individual's health causing
negative effects(Barkway,2009).Until the mid 20th century, global health threats were primarily a
result of infectious and communicable diseases. However, recently in developed countries, health
threats are now posed by diseases in which lifestyle play a role in the causation and or
management of illness. For instance, the modifiable risk factors for coronary heart disease,a
leading cause of disease burden are tobacco smoking, high blood

(Gillam,Yates,Badrinath,2007).Likewise,for behaviour change, simply telling people what is good for them is not an effective stratergy.Four pre conditions are necessary for behaviour change to take place whicha are:one must want to change, believe one can change, believe change will have the desired effect and know how to change(Gillam,Yates,Badrinath,2007).An individuals subjective norms, attitudes, self efficacy, peer support and education too influence behaviour change(Commonwealth government of Australia,2010).
The health psycology thereby, presents physological theories and models derived from theories
to hypotheise and explain and predict behaviour and show how behaviour under observation is
enacted. These ultimately result in strategies to help people overcome resistance to change
behaviour and prevent relapse(Barkway,2009).
Out of the many theories, only some have been mentioned below which are cognitive and non
cognitive theories as well as transtheoritical theory and motivational interviewing. According to Simonich(as cited in Flipse,1997),theories concerning
For a health educator to carry out their role effectively, they should understand the complicated processes which may influence an individual to change their behaviour.
1.1 Legislation is a set of laws that have been created by the government to make sure all childcare settings are run correctly. To promote positive behaviour, legislation’s such as the Children Act 1989, Human Rights Act 1998, Every Child Matters 2004, Equality Act 2010 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 are followed by the setting. These Act’s include rules and regulations that a setting is required to follow in order to promote positive behaviour.
An individual's attitude towards his health influences his capacity to maintain an optimum level of health, prevent illness or recover from a disease. Understanding patient's attitude towards his condition is the key to establishing an effective health-related program for health promotion, disease prevention and disease management. Hence, different health behavior theories have emerged. All of these are designed to help the patient and his family to facilitate learning, adjustment and behavior change to improve his quality of life. ( Butts & Rich, 2011)
*Since Week 1 was unsuccessful in going to sleep around that specific goal time I changed my project by pushing my sleep goals back 30 minutes for the remaining 4 weeks.
We live in an environment, where there exists a daily interaction of humans, natural forces and other living things. This environment provides for our growth, survival as well as danger. A very important factor of this environment is Disease or illness. Various factors contribute to illness, such as injury, unhealthy lifestyle and lack of healthcare.
A student named Jamie refuses to do her work. She is constantly talking and interrupting the other students and makes no effort to participate in class. The teacher has to constantly reprimand the student and it is causing less learning due to the interruptions within the classroom. She seems somewhat clear of the rules and procedures in the classroom, but is not motivated to follow them.
Technological advancement has often outperformed scientific knowledge associated with the causes that determine health. Increasing complications in social organization increase the possibilities by which multiple agents can disturb health, including factors such as those that risk physical health like venomous chemicals or radiation, restricted access to sanitary and pure natural resources, and the infinite amalgamation of them all. Decisions taken in areas apparently detached from health frequently have the prospect to have an impact on people’s health in either positive or negative manner due to a large number of links and connections in modern life. Health is an area comprised of highly intricate systems, which can be accidentally
I am completing this behavior change project on myself. I had to think long and hard about what habit I would like to change. I must say, at first, I actually did not have a personal problem with this behavior I chose to modify. After carefully examining my bank and credit card statements in November, I had noticed that I was spending hundreds of dollars per month on takeout.
This essay will compare and contrast two theories of behaviour management by Carl Rogers and BF Skinner and argue ways in which one of these theories could be implemented for a particular context and practice. Roger’s theory is based on a humanistic approach, while Skinner’s theory takes a behaviourist approach; each theory has both benefits and shortcomings. Their views form opposite ends of the learning spectrum. These theories will be examined as their respective works address the underlying issue of how children learn to behave.
Behavior Modification, a psychological theory of human behavior. It evolved from the application of experimentally derived principles of learning to the modification of problem behaviors. The theory is based on a psychological model of human behavior that rejects the psychoanalytic or quasi-disease model of mental illness. Approaches to behavior modification assume that abnormal behavior is acquired and maintained in the same manner as normal behavior and can be changed directly through the application of social-learning principles. Assessment procedures focus on describing how an individual behaves, thinks, and feels in specific situations. Treatment methods are derived from the theories and findings of
Individual’s attitude towards a specific action is influenced by beliefs, motivation, attitudes and drives and the influence of social norms Naidoo and Wills, (2000).Wellbeing behavior is defined as any activity undertaken to the goal of preventing illness or for enhancing health and wellbeing (Conner and Norman (1996). Smoking, consumption of alcohol, lack of activity, diet can influence individual wellbeing negatively. It is vital for health promoters to provide people with data that will change their behavior positively in order to promote and improve their wellbeing so they can have a healthy. Lifestyle Belief, values and attitudes are the important concepts that influence and drive behaviour and social norms. As a well-being promotion
A 50 year old man collapses to the floor while clutching his chest; he is having a heart attack. After his stay at the hospital, he goes in for his first visit with the doctor since his incident and a plan of action should be chosen to avoid it from occurring again. An individual’s actions towards becoming healthier has many components to it. When creating a program for the community, researchers create surveys to find a more effective program that will really work. The Health Belief and the Theory of Reasoned Action models are two of the many ways to get a glimpse of how people think, in order to help them change their unhealthy lifestyles.
This is why it goes further to explain other elements that are involved in making the individual actually take the step of making the change. These elements include self-efficacy and clues to action. Similarly, I find this health theory very applicable to my health condition and it can contribute a lot to the health change that I plan to take (Connolly, 2012). Since I was a kid, I have grown fond of foods that contain more calories and this has caused tremendous weight gain. However, due to the health risks associated with this condition, I have decided to change my habits and eat healthy foods to reduce my weight. Without this step, I am exposed to more health complications such as high cholesterol, strokes, cancers, high blood pressure and diabetes. These are some of the health risks that I am not willing to
My overall experience with the behavior change project was positive, as I was able to successfully change my sleeping habits. Although there were times when sticking to my behavior change plan was extremely difficult, I was able to stay on track and change my sleeping habits. As a result of my behavior change, I now feel healthier and less fatigued. Because of these physical improvements, important areas of my life, such as school and sports, have improved also. My performance in the classroom and on the basketball court has noticeably become better after making this behavior change.
It is important to understand the cause of the current crisis on the matter, factors that lead to diseases and good health, in addition to the steps that need to be taken by an individual so as to maintain good health.
