A. Topic Selection: Obesity B. Theory Behavior Change Theory Selected and Reason for Selecting The Social Cognitive Theory is learning by observing and interacting with others. This works perfect for my case study because children mimic what they see other children do. They also watch their older influences and do as them. I will use this theory by setting up programs for the children along with their families. This is targeting the obesity problem in 8 to 14 year old. I plan on implementing programs for children’s physical activity and healthy food choices. Compare and/or contrast two other theories Theory #1 Social Network Theory The Social Theory Network has to do with people’s relationships to one another. Having a healthy social network would have a positive effect on the people in it. My case study has to do with children who do not belong to social networks like older individuals would. Their parents probably have a stable social network build through the years, so their children are born into their networks until they are old enough to form their own. The Social Network Theory and the Social Cognitive Theory both are interpersonal theories. They are influenced by the people around them. Change occurs when behavior that is desired is reinforced. Theory #2 Transtheoretical Model The Transtheoretical Model lays out stages a person goes through for change. In this case it is making positive changes to prevent childhood obesity. The stages are
For example, because my brother is scared of needles, I could observe his actions and become afraid of needles and shots myself. My brother would be modeling a response that I could eventually follow. The social- cognitive theory is that people learn by observing others and believe they can produce behaviors to influence the events in their lives. The difference between the two is that social-cognitive theory is influenced by others and the observational theory is watching others.
In other words, this theory is based on how the external factors of society affect individuals and their behavior.
There are many theories that contribute to what may cause Juvenile Delinquency, one of which is called Social Learning Theory. Social Learning Theory states that behavior is modeled through observation, either directly through intimate contact with others or indirectly through media. Social learning theorist Albert Bandura, Walter Mischel, and Richard Walters indicate that children model their behavior according to the reactions they receive from others, the behavior of their parents, and the behavior they view through media.

The Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change (TTM) was created by Prochaska and DiClemente. It is based on “(1) the stages of change, (2) the decisional balance scale, (3) the strong and weak principle, (4) self-efficacy, and (5) the processes of change” (Kelly, 2008, p. 149). A person’s progression through the stages depends on their perception of the advantages of adopting a healthy lifestyle (Kelly, 2008).

This week of my behavior change project went more successful than the past week. I noticed that this week I worked on my time management and balanced my time between school, community service, and myself. It was much easier to be motivated and do exercise because of the time change. Before daylight savings by the time I completed my shifts it was already dark outside and windy. However now that I have more time at 7:00 pm it is still sunny and warm so the weather definitely motivated me to do at least a 30-minute exercise. This behavior change project has become a huge part of my everyday life. I lost sight of how important staying in shape affects my overall mental state along with my physical well-being. Having a life that consists of so many activities such as going to school, working, and maintaining a full and happy relationship with the people I care about is hard to balance with just making time for myself. That is why keeping this three day a week workout regime over the past five weeks has been so important; it made me realize that I can make time to focus on just working on myself, and in turn, improve all other aspects of my life. Realizing of course that there are many people in this world that have real life health problems that they seek professional help for. These changes in their lives require a system or a theory that must be applied to develop a strategic an organized way to regulate or change their behavior.

Social learning theory, developed by Bandura, discusses how people learn from one another through observation, modeling, and imitation bridging an individual’s attention, memory and motivation. Social learning theory identifies the importance of cognition, observable behavior, individual self-efficacy, and the extent of how the events surrounding an individual affect them; their locus of control. Social learning theory also looks at individual problem behavior being influenced by positive or negative reinforcement (Ashford & LeCroy, 2012).
The transtheoretical model helps explain the patient’s behavior change related to the health aspects. As per this change agent, the patient’s purposeful behavior change consists of the cognitive and the performance-based elements. The five stages of the model are precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and the maintenance stage (Virginia Tech Continuing & Professional Education, n.d.).
The Transtheoretical Model is a theory of health behavior that suggests that behavior change is a process, not an event. There are five stages of change someone can go through while attempting to engage in positive behavior: precontemplation, no intention to act within six months; contemplation, intention to act within six months; preparation, intention to act within the next thirty days along with some behavioral steps; action, changed behavior for less than six months, maintenance, changed behavior for more than six months; termination, end of the behavior. These stages are not linear, so an individual can move up and down the stages of change indiscriminately.
Social cognitive theory was developed by Albert Bandura (1986, 2012) and other psychologists. Social cognitive theory traditionally focuses more on learning by observation and on the cognitive processes that underlie personalities (Rathus, 2015). Additionally, social cognitive theorists see people influencing their environment as much as it influences them (Rathus, 2015). They also affirm that “variables” within people are to be considered to understand them. These can include knowledge and skills, ways of interpreting experiences, and systems and plans (Bandura, 2012). This theory focuses mainly on variables and observational learning of human behavior. Furthermore, this theory was placed third on the spectrum because of its relevance to both nature, and nurture perspectives.
My overall experience with the behavior change project was positive, as I was able to successfully change my sleeping habits. Although there were times when sticking to my behavior change plan was extremely difficult, I was able to stay on track and change my sleeping habits. As a result of my behavior change, I now feel healthier and less fatigued. Because of these physical improvements, important areas of my life, such as school and sports, have improved also. My performance in the classroom and on the basketball court has noticeably become better after making this behavior change.
