Behaviorism: Contemplating the Building Blocks
I read the textbook with the goal in mind to demonstrate my working knowledge regarding the principles of behavior analysis. I did this along with the probing questions found in the chapter's goals. This was done to refine and define my understanding of behavior analysis.
Mayer, Sulzer-Azaroff, and Wallace (2014) underscored the importance of describing all behaviors in an analytic perspective, not to rely on internal processes as valid explanations for the given behavior. This observation aligns with BACB Task List, FK-07 because it highlights the importance to identify observable behavior in an environmental context. This makes these observations tangible, which I believe makes mentalistic…show more content… The target behavior should be clear so people can discriminate between what is, and what is not the target behavior. According to Mayer et al. (2014) it should be objective; it should be observable, and should be in terms that are easy to measure. It is imperative that the definition of the behavior be precise. This will make it easier to attain accurate and reliable data. This goes without saying that the same rigorous criterion set forth for defining behavior should be applied to the environmental variables According to Mayer et al. (2014) having a clear definition of the behavior and environmental variables only helps facilitate the ease of the applied intervention. These defined terms safeguards the consistency and accuracy; thus adding accountability. This task agrees with BACB Task List codes, I-01 and I-02. These assessment codes focus an individual to identify the given aspects of the contingency plan. As inferred by Mayer et al. (2014) when all the terms and variables are identified, this assists in comparing and interpreting…show more content… According to Mayer et al. (2014) code 1.03 facilitates professional development by expanding understanding of current practices and maintaining core concepts in behavior analysis. This diligence to their credentials assists in ongoing efforts to continue broadening and maintaining behavior analysis comprehension. This brings me to the importance of providing services within the scope of your training, not to overstep your knowledge base, which aligns with code 1.02 of Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts. These two codes share a symbiotic relationship; the former is about maintaining and expanding individual's current understanding of applied behavior analysis, while the latter is about how services are provided in accordance with that individual’s education, training, and supervision experience. Codes 1.03 and 1.02 are essential for the social skills intervention project. It will assist me not only in a principled approach, but it will intensify my understanding of a practical application of behavior analysis.
My final observation was the need to construct a socially valid behavioral goal. This corresponds with code 2.09 Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts. According to code 2.09 of the Professional and Ethical Compliance Code for Behavior Analysts (2016) clients have the right to effective procedures
